There are a few ways you can do this:
Use ultra-low sulphur fuel (not sure if the US has this but the UK does).
Change or clean out the air filter (check my profile for a how-to)
Make sure the EGR valve is connected up properly. This is the exhaust gas recirculating valve, located on the intake manifold. Unbolt is, clean it out with a wire brush and carb cleaner, refit.
Get the Nissan checked again, if it is still high, the catalytic converter could be due a change, especially as it will be 12 years old.
