The a/c compressor will run anytime the heater is in the a/c or defrost position or if there is a switch for the a/c anytime the switch is one.

The a/c compressor should turn on and off periodically. If it is switching on and off every couple of seconds than there may be an issue with the a/c system.

Clock dims and radio shuts off and comes back on.

sounds like the alternator isnt making enough amps. maybe its a bad rebuil. also a worn belt will slip on alternator under heavy load. check belt and tentioner.

When heat is turned on car engine fails ... burning rubber smell and grinding/rubbing noise in the engine

a/c compressor may be seized. A/c compressor kicks on when in defrost, a/c, floor/defrost modes any time temperature is above 40 degrees F. That will burn the sepenine belt and stall the engine.
Try turing heat on floor mode only & see if ok.

No heat in car and temp gauge rises while driving but stays half

With engine cold, remove rad cap & check level in rad. Top it up if needed to 1 or 2 inches from top. Start engine, turn heater on (not defrost) and observe coolant level as engine warms up, add if necessary. Radiator fan should be off, and only come on when engine reaches normal operating temperature, for a short time, then shut off again. Let it run until that happens about 3 times, then put rad cap back on. If temperature gauge climbs up over normal toward hot, too much, shut it off. Do you now have heat? Is rad fan acting as I described? Let me know.

AC/heat/defrost functions don't work

there is a blend door and a selector door in the HVAC system. These are run by vacuum or servo motors. Sounds like this little motor is your problem. Hope this helps you.
