For some months now when starting from cold, before turning the key, the throttle/gas pedal needed to have some boot to free it. Then evrything OK. The car refuses to start now and I noted that the throttle/gas pedal was not stiff before attempting to start. I suspect something amiss inside the carb. The connecting pedal to carb cable is OK as I can see it moving on the carb. There is a strong smell of petrol/gas. Any help appreciated

Yes,fuel can gell up in severe cold..a shot of starting fluid can give you an easier start...but what concerns me is the smell of fuel. In severe cold some rubber seals can harden up and crack causing a leak...check seals around fuel filter on bottom along frame rail or also check injector seals...somewhere you have a leaking seal to smell fuel...check for fuel accumulation somewhere.
Possibly a bad or dirty Idle Air Control motor. The engine computer controls the operation of this motor to control idle speed. A pintle on the motor extends and retracts, according to signal from the computer. The pintle controls an air passage below it to give or take away air during idle -when the throttle shaft is closed, no air will get into the engine through the throttle body except through the idle air passage . The IAC motor or valve is on the throttle body, with a 4 wire connector. Take it off and look for carbon or coking deposits around the valve's pintle, and in the air passage beneath it. With the idle valve off, plug the connector back on it, then watch the pintle as the key is turned to on. If there is no movement whatsoever, the motor is probably bad.
I have also heard that a bad coolant temperature sensor can cause such a hard start. If the computer does not know the engine is cold, it won't put enough gas into the cylinders for easy starts. The engine needs more gas to start and run when cold.
Do you smell gasoline fuel ?? When there's too much fuel, it saturates the spark plugs, preventing ignition. Let it sit for an hour to let spark plugs dry, then it starts OK later. Next time, turn starter without giving any throttle or very small throttle as engine turns. Myself, when my 2006 Dodge Plymouth minivan (sitting in storage) needs to start, I squirt (half second) starting fluid into air filter, close the air filter housing to trap flammable gas from starting fluid, then turn the engine without pressing on throttle. When the engine starts is when I give it a little throttle to bring up the RPM to 2,000 until it idles on its own without stalling from cold engine.
replace the starter. Being a manual transmission you should be able to pop the clutch to get it going till you replace the starter. If you don't know how to pop the clutch follow these steps. That way you can still drive the car. When need to.
Get inside the vehicle
and depress the clutch to shift the car into "Neutral." Insert the key

When in gear, the engine will be forced to crank and the ignition will
send a spark for a start. The quicker the vehicle is going before the
clutch is released will determine how many times the engine will turn
over. More cranks equal more opportunities to ignite the gas and air for
combustion and the engine to start without a battery or starter
pumping the throttle pedal will not make it start any easier ,i would suggest trying to change the autochoke temperature sensor so it enriches the fuel when its cold .but even this wouldnt throw the engine light on so again i would ask a local mechanic to have a look for you and read the codes as to why the engine light is on
Carbureted models have a fast idle cam on the throttle,It is a screw that sets against a movable part,called the cam,when the engine heats up,the cam will drop upon tapping the gas pedal.Set the carb,while the engine is cold,by tapping the gas pedal,then adjust the fast idle cam screw by turning it in,with the engine running.Start out by turning the screw in a full turn before starting engine so it will run,then adjust the screw as the engine runs.
