Question about 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee
If you know where the EGR valve is located take a wrench and gently tap on the valve if you notice an immediate change in the idle you have found the problem, the problem is the egr vlve is slightly binding and the right way to fix it is to replace it

Look for a possible vacuum leak Use can of carburettor cleaner carefuly sprayed around inlet manifold and around injector seals.Spray with engine running and engine will instantly react to any leak no matter how small.Dont allow fan to blow onto paint as carb cleaner will damage it.
