Need to replace rear brake shoes having trouble removing drums cant find adjustment screw on backplate thanks for help shane

Just worked on 1998 Escort rear drum brakes. Couldn't remove drums until I found a threaded hole in the face of each drum. Put the correct metric bolt in the hole and turn to pull the drum off.

Not a solution per se but correction. 97 escort rear drum brakes do not use a STAR ADJUSTER. They use a "quadrant" adjuster attached to emergency brake cable I think. You'll see it coming out the back near top of backing plate. I don't think you can adjust them at all until drum is off. They are self adjusting once reinstalled.

You could try tapping the drum all the way around and on the front between the wheel studs with a hammer to break any rust that may have gathered

Check to be sure emergency brake is not engaged ..and that cable is not frozen/rusted keeping it from releasing at baking plate into back of drum..often there is a knock out...(dimpled.stamped impression in backing plate) where the adjusting hole should be..you would need to slam that out (or in) with a heavy drift or screwdriver you are willing to hurt..then get to the star adjuster adn back it off
use lubricant around drum/backing plate area and at center (hub/drum) area where rust happens and pry with large screwdrivers 180 degrees apart between backing plate and drum wiggling and shifting positions around circumference...also a trick..open zerk fitting at that wheel cylinder and wiggle screwdrivers 'tween backing plate and drum to get shoes to close some....good luck

Can not get rear brake drum back on ford escort


The auto adjuster needs to be released! It should be a knurled nut or notched nut, turn it a bit to close the shoes! When you press the brake pedal after fitting hub and wheels they will automatically reset!

Did complete brake job on 1997 Ford Escort wagon no abs rear shoes, drums, lines, wheel cylinders,even changed the block at the rear were the lines go in & out of. Front lines hoses pads, caliplers...


is brake pedal hard to push down without engine running ,if so proceed to step two and thats to start engine and then push on brake and if pedal softer to push then the servo is working ,now if excessive pedal travel with engine running then remove the rear drums ,make sure the outside lip is cleaned out and then adjust the brake shoes manually till they rub when you turn the drum ,this will cure it but remember that it has to bed in of course new pads brake disks ,new shoes and drums it has to bed in so give it a chance .

1998 ford escort se hand brake need adjusting. doesn't hold.


Try to adjust the rear brakes tighter at the shoes, if you have drum brakes. May require taking the drum off and adjusting the adjuster. Or, adjusting it from the backing plate access hole if there is one.

Be sure to check the cables to make sure they are not broken anywhere between the hand brake lever and the back brakes.

ADJUSTMENT


  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  3. Remove the brake drum.
  4. Using a brake adjusting gauge, measure the inside diameter of the brake
    drum.
  5. Compare the brake drum measurement to the brake shoes.
  6. Adjust the brake shoes by inserting a brake adjustment tool into the knurled
    quadrant of the rear quad operating lever and adjust the shoes to the same
    measurement as the brake drum.
  7. Install the brake drum.
  8. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10. Check the brake system operation by making several stops while driving
    slowly forward.

Brake shoe removel:

Depress and turn the retainers for the hold-down springs and pins to remove them from each shoe. Slide the brake shoe assembly--including the shoes and springs--down so you can disengage the top ends of the shoes from the cylinder and tilt them to lift them past the retaining plate.

Unhook the lower retracting spring from the front brake shoe to disconnect it. Spread the shoes apart at the bottom to remove the adjusting screw, the screw's retracting spring and the adjuster lever. Remove the front brake shoe.

Pull the parking brake cable spring back with diagonal cutting pliers, grip the cable with the pliers without cutting it, unhook the cable from the parking brake lever and remove the rear brake shoe with the lever.

Disconnect the parking brake lever from the rear shoe by spreading the retaining clip with a screwdriver and removing the clip and its spring washer.
  • Step 4 Pull the parking brake cable spring back with diagonal cutting pliers, grip the cable with the pliers without cutting it, unhook the cable from the parking brake lever and remove the rear brake shoe with the lever.
  • Step 5 Disconnect the parking brake lever from the rear shoe by spreading the retaining clip with a screwdriver and removing the clip and its spring washer.

    Does the abs sensor have to come off to change rear brake shoes on accent?


    hi from the uk in answer to your question you do not need to disconnect or remove the abs sensor you just remove the brake drum from the hub then remove shoe locating springs that retain shoes to backplate then lift off and remove bottom return spring this then allows you to slip the brake shoes off w/cyl at top complete with spring and auto adjuster ? then to remove the handbrake cable just pull the shoe and the quadrant lever apart so cable can be lifted out of the hook up on lever ? you can now interchange shes/springs /adjuster on your bench ? also run te adjuster wheel back on thread to off position this will enable you to fit shoes back to backplate and moreso help in fitting cable to its hookup ? when brakeshoes are refitted ? and centralized on back plate ? you can manuall rotate the adjuster wheel and keep tryin the drum for fitting and rotating with no binding trial/error method when satisfied ? refit screws to secure drum then do same with other side when completed you must bleed both wheels this will improve b/pedal your handbrake will also be better/less travel when applied hope these instructions help you ? best wishes from uk

    Cannot remove rear brake drums


    You need to back off the adjusters on the rear shoes to allow the worn drum to pass over the brake shoes.
    A worn drum will have a unworn drum section on its outer edge where the brake shoes don't normally rub.
    This must unworn ring must be able to pass over the brake shoes before you can get the drum off.

    Two tools should be used through the brake adjuster access hole.
    One small diameter blade screwdriver can be used to push the self adjuster lever away from the notched adjuster nut, while a second flat bladed tool is used to lever the adjuster nut, rotating it so as to back off brake shoe expander adjustment.

    The rear drum brakes:
    • Have internal shoes that expand against the brake drum (1126).
    • Are a single-anchor type.
    • Are actuated by one rear wheel cylinder (2262).
    • Have two pistons in the rear wheel cylinder (2261). One exerts force against the upper end of the primary shoe; the other exerts force against the upper end of the secondary shoe.
    • Adjust rear brake shoes and linings (2200) automatically.
    • Need manual brake adjustment if the adjusters are not operating properly or after the rear brake shoes and linings have been replaced.
    When the brake pedal is applied, hydraulic fluid pressure forces the pistons in the rear wheel cylinder outward, moving the rear brake shoes and linings against the brake drum.
    The rear drum brake system includes the parking brake mechanism. Refer to Section 206-05 .

    Handbrake adjustment


    HI THERE DES DAVIES BEFORE YOU GO ADJUSTING H/BRAKE FIRST THING TO CHECK IS THAT UNDERNEATH AT BACK PLATE WHERE BRAKE DRUMS GO OVER MAKE SURE THAT H/BRAKE IS OFF (BLOCK WHEELS) & CHECK THAT PLUNGER ON BACK PLATE DOES NOT PUSH THROUGH IF IT DOES THEN REAR BRAKES NEED ADJUSTED YOU WILL THEN NEED TO SLACKEN OFF H/BRAKE ADJUSTMENT UNDERNEATH CAR(NYLOCK SCREWS)ONCE YOU HAVE DONE THIS REMOVE DRUMS & ADJUST BRAKE SHOES OTHERWISE YOU WILL STILL HAVE A POOR H/BRAKE.

    Removing rear drum


    You need to get a bolt with the same diameter and thread pitch as the brake drumretaining screws. On my 1997 Escort that's an 8mm x 1.25 thread pitch bolt. The length should be about 12mm. or larger. Don't get a bolt that's longer than about 20mm. The bolt goes into a hole in the brake drum, bearing down on a plate inside the hub. You can't use a brake drum retaining screw because you need to be able to apply more torque to the fastener than could be safely applied to a jacked vehicle
