Question about 1995 Dodge Caravan

1 Answer

Guages don't work

All gauges quit working today. I took it in for an oil change and it has not been driven more than 20 or 30 miles in the past year. The gauges worked when I took it in and did not when I left. I took it back and they checked the fuses under the dash and under the hood and they were all good.

That question is very tough to answer.
It depends on driving conditions and other factors. If the vehicle is driven 5,000 to 10,000 miles per year and not in dusty areas or in city traffic, you can change it at 5000 or 6000 miles.
If the vehicle is driven more than 10,000 miles per year, or in dusty conditions, or city traffic, the oil should be changed more often.
And using synthetic oil changes the formula.

Engine stalls on highway starts after 15 min

Sounds like the same problem I have been having with my 2002 Sedona for
the past 6 or 8 months. It would run OK for several days, weeks, or months,
then just quit. If I let it set for 10 to 20 minutes, it would restart and run fine
for at least the rest of that day. About 2 weeks ago, I was fortunate that it happened when someone was with me, so I was able to determine that it
was not getting any spark. Since then the problem has gotten worse and
more frequent - it was happening almost every day and would take over
1/2 an hour before it would start again. This morning was the last straw.
I drove for about 4 miles and it quit. Took 1 hour and 10 minutes before it
would restart. Drove another 2 miles and did it again. This time it took
1 hour 35 minutes before restart. After 1 more mile, it quit again. Took 2
hours, this time. Made it another mile and BAM! - did it again.
My bro towed me home. I determined that it is most likely NOT the crankshaft position sensor, because 99% of the time they either work,
or they don't. Very rarely does it cause in intermittant problem. The most
likely suspect is the engine computer. That was always a likely culpret
when I worked on GM cars. Today I installed a $50 junk yard engine control computer. I am crossing my fingers!
I will know on Thursday, as I have a 50 mile trip to make.
I will post again on Thursday, to let you all know.

Some of my guages work & some dont(the thing that keeps track of miles gone & the guage that keeps total miles, also background lights) on the dashboard, is it electrical or a fuse prob ??

several things could cause this, a connector on back of panel came loose, shorted wire rubbed through insulation. start with looking at gauge cluster panel.

When I went to get an oil change I was told to come back when my indicator said 10%--I drove 4 months and It was only at 80% if I wait for 10% it may be a year?

How many miles have you driven in 4 months?---You are going by the oil life percentage indicator when you read that message...
I don't recommend doing this...Change your oil every 3000 miles, or every 5000 if use a synthetic oil....I hope this helps,

Toyota 1994 oil engine , when the engine cold oil pressure execellent whenever it gets hot oil pressure drops rapidly

A symptom of a engine that is almost 20 years old perhaps 200k+ miles. Mine does the same thing. I don't know how accurate the dash gauge is ... but I haven't been worrying about it. I run 10w-30 year round. I've had the truck over 8 years and 120k miles ... still runs great and the oil pressure gauge works as you describe since I bought it. Unless you are sure you have serious bearing problems or whatever I'd just drive it.

oil sending units go out occasionaly and dont really mess anything up other than leaking oil on the ground just make sure you have the correct amount of oil in the motor and youll be fine. i just changed mine it quit working around 75,000 miles and i helped change my friends on his dodge he was around 87,000 miles. we both done this last year and no problems have come from it....

Oil gage buries all the way past high. After driving with it like that for a while, the truck engine konks out and will not start. Last time we waited on the side of road for 40 minutes and then it started...

Do you believe oil gage? Oil psi sensor can go bad. If PSI correct then is PCV valve clear?
I'm more inclined to think you have some kind of electrical problem, false gauge, ignition quits or fuel delivery problem. Extreme high oil PSI would blow out your engine seals, leaking oil everywhere. When you get high oil psi, does removing oil cap make it drop? Do you have good clean oil and filter?
When it quits do you have spark, fuel to delivery system? (throttle body or fuel inj) High oil psi shouldn't make truck hard to start. Baffling.
