Question about 1999 Ford Expedition
You can try shifting into manual 1 to get moving then once you get going shift the lever up into Drive. This should work, then drive it to a shop to have your ****** looked at.

I have a 1999 ford expedition and when i get in reverse it cuts off and has a hard shift when sitting at a red light.

Check engine light on? Sounds like a bad pressure control solenoid. If it is a bad PCS. You have to replace the solenoid block in the 5R55W transmission.

I would check the shifter and the linkage. Even though the shifter lever is moving, that doesn't mean it's moving the linkage on the transmission.

I believe that reverse is operated by a brake band. So it seems to be stuck. It is operated by a piston, and the seal could have swelled and caused too much friction. But you could loosen up the adjustor so that it is disengaged, in order to get forward gears again. Perhaps you can force the piston to retract as well, once you drop the pan again.

I have been hearing about the trans planetary failing on 96-02 taurus/sables. My personal 98 sable 3.0 expired that way.
