Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

1996 Subaru legacy with 5 starters replaced since June 2011. Still not starting normally. Will generally work for 2 weeks post replacement and then nothing when the key is in the start position. Starters check out ok on the bench. Normally after 2-3 weeks we can start it after tapping the starter lightly with a half inch socket extension bar. Sometimes it is a 2 person job with one person having the key in the start position while the other one taps. Now with our latest starter we are have hooked up a remote starter switch (after the starter failed to work) and used it to start with the key in the start position. Any suggestions, short of dynamite, we don't want to purchase another car yet.

I really think you have some other problem going on that you think is the starter. Maybe a starter relay. Does it just not start when it is warm and after it sits it starts? Does you remote starter switch bypass the key switch and go straight to the starter and then it aways cranks over. That would indicate to me that something is either wrong with the key switch or wiring to the starter relay or solenoid.

SOURCE: i have a 1995 subaru

Sounds like a bad Earth connection. Check all the battery and earth leads where they connect to the Battery, Engine, Starter Motor and Body. If possible disconnect, clean and reconnect.

Relplaced both headlights on Subaru Legacy 2011, Is this normal?

Generally, it is better to replace both at the same time, simply because the possibility of the other one following after. BUT $150.00? wow, that is not something that would void your warranty if you replace it yourself. The bulbs are as cheap as $7.00 at your local parts store. Save yourself $130.00 and replace them yourself. ^^ Good luck and hope this helps. P.S. If you are talking about the entire headlight assembly, then $150.00 is more than fare.

My 94 subaru legacy wagon wont start. It only clicks when i turn on the key. I had starter checked and it tested good.

Hello and welcome to FIxYa!

It can be caused by a week battery. As a first course of action, I strongly suggest that you have the battery charged or have it replaced for the starter to kick fully.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

It could be the relay, But I don't think you have one, most starters are direct wired from the key to a solenoid on the starter, If there is a relay, it is the big fuse box under the hood, and is just a electric switch, not subject to cold. It sounds more like the terminals are filthy and the contacts are not connecting. Clean off all the wires with a wire brush and scrub the terminals with it, get underneath the connections too. Where the battery cables connect to the lead terminals, If I was up there I would be plugging in my car at night to keep it warm. It will start right up in the morning.

Replaced battery about a month ago. After about as

Could be a poor connection on one of the battery terminals - be sure they are tight.
Could also be a starter solenoid that is sticking.

Were is the starter located in a subaru legacy outback wagon 1996 2.5

On the drivers side where the motor and transmission join on the top, you should see the starter. Your main hot or red battery cable should lead right to it. It has 2 bolts holding it. 1 is the bolt to hold starter and trans together, the other just holds the starter. Hope this helps and have a great day.

1995 subaru legacy with new starter and solenoid, every week or two solenoid will click but starter won't engage.I can jump from solenoid to starter and start it.

A solenoid needs so much power to kick in.  I think your battery is getting old and not at full capacity.  Hove it check and replace if needed.
