Changed air filters, spark plugs (using the recommended),cleaned injectors, cleaned throttle body and i have seen check engine light....hard start is mostly in the mornings after the engine has been switched off for a long period and the gas fumes seem to be coming from a ventilation tube on top of the gas tank(changed it but still having issue)...i also notice there is no vacum sound whenever i remove the gas cap....thats when i started noticing all these symptoms.
SOURCE: Hi Rick, Good afternoon.
Usually black soot on your spark plugs indicates a rich air/fuel mixture. This can sometimes be fixed up with some basic maintenance. This can involve also changing your spark plug wires. The other thing that you should check out is the fuel pressure. If the fiel pressure is too high then this can cause the ratio to be too high. You should also check your timing. On newer vehicles timing cannot be changed however if it is off then this could indicate a problem with the engine's computer. Another cause of black soot can be that your air filter is EXTREMELY dirty. Go ahead and check these things out and get back to me if they did not fix anything.

well you could try to get a vacuum gauge and see if your car reads what it supposed to and if you buy one it could tell you what it could be.

I had same problem with Scion. Took it to a Mobil One quick oil change place. Flushed injectors. It was under $100 and ran like new.
