Dear Josh Wambles,

Some of these units suffer with stuck floats in fuel tanks, so the best thing you can do is drain out your fuel tank properly, then fill it with water and then try and get a reading, as the tank is filled, the float rises, electrical resistance is altered and as a result, you get a reading on your guage. If filling with water and cleaning out the tank doesnt work, then im afraid you are going to be dismantling the device that is attached to the tank and you will be checking that; but just before you do, try removing the guage itself and putting a multimeter to the wires and see if you have a reading, if you do, your guage is trashed, get a new one. If not, then as said, you will be busy with the float and other components that are probably fitted inside the tank.

What can cause this?

Corrosion, running your car too low on fuel, busted electrical connections, water, sediment in the tank, rubbish fuel, bad maintenance.

I hope this is the fixya for you and I look forward to hearing how you get on, in the meantime, if you have any further questions, then do let me know and I will respond as quickly as I can.

Yours Sincerely

Ouszen

Probably just a function of age. The gauge operates off of a float in the fuel tank and is connected to a rheostat that actually sends input to the instrument panel gauge. The body computer may also be involved.
Check the connections you can and if there is nothing loose or corroded learn to depend on the trip meter. If you know how far you can get on a tank of fuel that is probably more accurate than a 17 year old fuel gauge.

The fuel pump and sending unit are both in the tank they should be replace at the same time most chy pumps are sold as a pump and module you should take it back to the repair shop

I have a 1998 Jeep Cherokee I was driving it and quit running the fuel pump quit running and the gas gage stopped working

check your fuel pump relay. if not that, then it's your fuel pump. the gas gauge is in the fuel pump, so if your fuel pump stopped working, your gas gauge won't work

I have a 1995 jeep sport it crank but wont turn a lot of people tell it could be fuel pump it could I really dont know it I need answers

If it cranks at normal speed, it could be the fuel pump or loss of spark. Autozone has a loan-a-tool policy. Pretty sure you can borrow or rent a fuel pressure gauge to see how good your pump and fuel filter is. Just hook it up to the test port on the engine's fuel rail, and turn the key to on, not start. It should immediately show about 40 pounds of pressure- 40 psi. If it is good, then it is probably an ignition problem, and you need to check for spark on a spark plug wire.

If the test shows no pressure, then the pump may be bad. It is not turning on, for sure. A final check before replacing the pump is to check that the pump power wire at the fuel tank connector has power on it with the engine cranking over. If it has power there when cranking, the pump circuit is good (all fuses and relays good). The fuel pump itself is the problem.

On that model jeep, if it is a Cherokee Sport like my son's '95 jeep, it is quite easy to change out a fuel pump. You don't have to drop the gas tank to replace the pump. The assembly goes into the gas tank at the front upper part of the tank, above and just back of the rear differential. I changed out the fuel pump on his jeep in a K-mart parking lot in a little under 2 hours. Wiggling and twisting the assembly out of the gas tank hole for removal was the most time consuming part. It was really quite easy. If you have ever replaced a pump before, .the jeep is a breeze.

did you change sending unit? that is what sends the signal of amount of fuel. if so then your gauge motor is worn. get a new cluster from wreckers. check all wiring for bad grounds

99 Jeep Cherokee Sport, 4.0L -won't start

you need to have it connected to an OBD2 machine and watch if you are missing the cam sensor showing RPMs
or if your missing crank sensors RPMs,
it could be a wiring problem or computer if your seeing the RPMs from both sensors, and the last thing i would check is hooking up a fuel gauge to the reed valve and watch what fuel pressure you have while cranking,if the cam sensor is the culprit it will turn the fuel off after the cranking.

Sounds more like a fuel pump problem ,but iam often wrong,on the older models i have found the rubber connecting hose inside the tank that connects the pump to the outlet on the fuel gauge unit perishes and the fuel pressure drops giving the symptoms you describe

Jeep cherokee 1995 cuts out at red lights and also

Try checking the fuel pressure first. If it is lower than what is recommended than the either the pump is a fault or quite possibly the filter. But if you suspect that the filter is at fault change the filter first because it will be a cheaper fix than the pump. But beware some of these filters are not changeable unless you do change the pump because some are incorporated with the pump.

Check VSS Vehicule Speed Sensor wire may be corroted, bad connection or faulty; if 2wd the adaptor is located on the extension housing of the transmission (left side)
if 4wd look on transfer case extension (left side)
