This is a pretty common problem on most gm's. What is happening is the white wire from the flasher module is being grounded inside of the multifunction switch when it is not supposed to be. The fix for this is top relace the turn signal multifunction switch that the turn signal lever is attached to. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Thank you for using!

SOURCE: continous clicking (signal lights)

The multi-function (aka combination) switch probably has contaminated grease in the switch contacts from wear.

for do-it-yourself repair instructions. You can also buy a new aftermarket switch, if you don't want to take apart the existing one and clean up the electrical contacts.

For example, see:,SW1414/shopping/allResults.htm
(or just go to and search for part #SW1414)

For 2003 Grand Am, it was listed as "Duralast / dimmer switch", but other makes & models may go by another name.

SOURCE: turn signals dont work

check the flasher and the fuse

Posted on Nov 19, 2008

This is a common problem on many Grand Ams. GM has a recall out there on the 00-03 models. Unfortunately they discontinued the recall for the 04 and newer models. The flasher most likely needs to be replaced. The part costs about $30 and labor can run you between 70 and 90 dollars an hour. The part only takes about 30 minutes to be replaced. So you can either get it repaired or just turn your radio up really loud and drown out the ticking noise!!! :D

SOURCE: 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP / Multi-function Switch

i have the sameproblem. Dealer part was quoted to me at $510.00. All after market parts stores were $350- 450. Try moving the emerg. flasher button while you step on the brakes and someone else watches the lights. I jammed paper beside the button and they work until I can fix it.I had to order the multi-function switch. and you have to pull the air bags to replace it.

My turn signals on my 2002 pontiac grand am wont work is it tha fuses or???

The gm line of that erra runs their turn signal through the hazzard switch, when your turn signals are inop, try depressing the hazzard switch a few cycles, if this alows your turn signal to function again as hazard switch will be required to repair the problem, hope this helps

Hazzard switch keeps clicking after i use my signal lights

Dear Steve_Borela,

Try pressing the switch again, these are usually DPDT (double pole double throw) switches. Meaning they have a push to make, push to unmake connection. In short your hazard lights are still on. If you have turned them off, then either your switch or a connection issue.

Hope this is the fixya for you.

Yours sincerely

I have a ticking like a blinker sound ticking inside my vehicle.. it sounds like a continuous blinker going. All my out side lights flashers blinkers are working .What could this be?

look for the hazzard /4 ways switch. see if this is where this ticking is coming from. if so slowly move the turn signal switch . if it stops or changes, you have a bad turn signal switch. the hazzard and the turn signals operate through the hazzard has a built in relay.hope this was helpful

Turn signals and hazzards dont flash how can i

Check the relay/fuse box, the relay that causes them to flash can go defective...the clicking you hear is the relay opening and closing to turn the lights on and off.

Clicking noise from the blinker wont turn off!

There are 2 common things that cause this.
1. the hazzard flasher is faulty. the hazzard button and the turn signal flasher are all in one. Sometimes pushing the hazzard button in slightly will get the noise to happen, and is an indication it is faulty.
2. The turn signal switch in the steering column is bad. Turning the turn signal from left to right- very fast and harshly, will sometimes clear it up for awhile.

Having problems with repeated clicking in dash when turn signals are not on. I believe it is a multifunction switch but don't know how to repair and what tools I need. It is a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am GT. ...

The most common for this is that the hazzard flasher switch is the problem. The hazzard flasher / switch is also the turn signal flasher. There is no wire to cut to stop the clicking. The switch needs to be replaced. Lightly pushing in on the switch button will cause the lights to act irratically if it is the problem. The only other thing that causes this is the turn signal switch in the steering column. Tech jk
