My 2005 Cadillac Deville speedometer goes to zero and transmission seems get stuck and car will not go over 15-20 mph with high engine rpms. Unless I mash on the petal to make it skip gears. #help

problems with speed sensor for transmission. Computer uses a speed signal to shift transmission through the gears. Without speed input, the computer doesn't know when to shift the transmission. Either the speed sensor is bad or wiring from the ECM to the speed sensor is bad. Usually 2 wires lead to the sensor. The sensor generates a AC voltage signal with higher speeds generating more voltage and frequency. The ECM (computer), looks at the signal to see how fast the vehicle is traveling.

Code 15 on 1988 ram 150 without vehicle speed sensor

Code 15 relates to a failure in the vehicle speed sensor circuit. The job of the vehicle speed sensor is to inform the computer about the speed of the vehicle so the computer can calculate engine load and prepare the engine idle speed control system while the vehicle is decelerating. On deceleration, the idle speed control system will allow additional air flow into the engine as the vehicle rolls to a stop. Usually code 15 will be accompanied by erratic speedometer readings (or no reading), erratic AT gear shifting, TCC lockup clutch instability, and intermittent or complete failure of the cruise control.

How do i install a engine speed sensor on my 1998 jeep grand cherokee loredo 4.0

Ther are more than one type of speed sensor for jeeps....I am chrysler jeep tech...there are 2 speed sensors on the trans and also speed sensors at the wheels (IF IT HAS ABS)...Normally the engine speed is done by an IAC Motor...If you are meaning idle...Can you send more information....
Also you may have a vacum leak..........You have an Input speed sensor and an output speed sensor ....Do you know exactly which it is ....Both are at transmission /If 4 wheel drive see transfer case also.I have the manual at my fingertips and will be glad to assist you with any problems............................I can help................metalpoet

Where is the idle sensor in the 2000 chevy impala

There is no idle sensor on the 2000 Chevrolet Impala, according to my online resource.

But, there is the following that senses rpm of the engine and thus the idle speed when the Throttle Position Sensor is at 5% or the accelerator pedal is not depressed:

Crankshaft Position Sensor Operation Engine speed is a very important input to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Crankshaft speed and position are the basis for many calculations made by the computer. Crankshaft position values are transmitted to the computer by pickup coils also known as Permanent Magnet (P/M) generators, Hall Effect sensors or optical sensors. The Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) also known as engine speed sensor is typically located in proximity to the crankshaft.
In addition, the PCM uses the CKP sensor in conjunction with the camshaft position sensor to calculate and perform misfire diagnostics.
Related Symptoms
  • A No Start / Intermittent Start condition - Can be caused by a faulty crankshaft position sensor due to loose connections, bad grounds, high resistance in the circuit, or opens in the circuit.
  • Engine Misfire Diagnostic Trouble Codes
NOTE: Engine Mechanical conditions can also create the same or similar symptoms. (Don't overlook basic mechanical integrity).

If the battery is unhooked for i5 minutes and the engine needs to relearn how to idle, how will it relearn?

This is a difficult question to answer in a short manner. The engine uses about a half a dozen sensors to sense how the engine is running.
The throttle positioning sensor tells the computer where the accelerator pedal is, the Map sensor tells the computer how much pressure is in the intake manifold. The MAS ( mass air flow sensor) tells the computer how much air is moving through the intake tube, and the coolant sensors determine engine temp and send this to the computer to aide in idle speed whether it's hot or cold out.
Then you have the 02 sensor which tells the computer how much oxygen is being sent out the exhaust. And lastly the idle air controller, this is what makes the car idle and is influenced buy the other sensors and computer to tell the engine to idle at the factory 700-850 rpm's when warm or 1000-1300 rpm's when extremely cold.
The engine doesn't really relearn it just simply has to read all the sensors again after a reset ( battery disconnect) to go back to the computers default idle speed.
I hope this has in someway explained the way in which the computer and all it's sensors work to help idle the vehicle.

Speed sensor problems

speed sensor tells the pcm how fast the car is going, Also it serves to tell the abs computer that the wheel speeds are the same, and triggers the abs in the event of a slide. Some speed sensors controll how the trans shifts as well as speedometer operations :)

2000 sonata check engine lite came on, transmission went to 2 nd gear. computer said idler control valv bad.put in new, reset computer, drove 100 yds. check eng lite 2nd gear again, now computer said speed...

The output speed sensor is located on top of the transmission output shaft, this will send speed value to the transmission control module (TCM).
The vehicle speed sensor is installed on the differential of the transmission, and sends speed value to speed gauge on instrument cluster.

Check also IAC valve and look for vacuum leaks using an hand tool gauge(Vacuum Gauge and Fuel Pump Pressure).

Location of speed sensor a for 99 dodge intrepid

The "Vehicle Speed Sensor" signal is generated by the transmisson output speed sensor. That is the one located at the rear of the case. It is externally mounted. That supplies "vehicle speed" info to the other On-Board Computers. The input turbine speed sensor is located just behind the bell housing area of the case. I believe the trans controller is the only module that needs that info. The Crank Position Sensor give engine RPM info and it is located on the bell housing near the engine block. I hope this helps.
