Question about 1997 Chevrolet Lumina

1 Answer

I have a 1997 chevy lumina 3.1 NEED HELP!!!

Just in a few days my lumina has been giving me a lot of problems. I have to buy a new alternator for the car because the old one locked up. I put the new one on... The battery was dead so I charged it up... I waited a few then when to try to jump it off. Something popped and smoke came out of the hood. Thats how we found out the strater was no good any longer. The brushes in the starter was about gone. I bought a used one. I put jumper cables on it and it worked. We put it in and try to crank it and it didnt work. The key wasnt turned over at all and the fan was on? We figured we blown fuses when we heard the pop. We check all the fuse boxes under the hood and all of them were good we checked the fuse box inside the car everything was good. The driver side has power but the passager side does not. Its not getting that power. The battery is charged so thats not it. None of the lights in or outside the car will work. When we turn the key nothing happens. We know the alternator and the starter work. What could possible be wrong with this car????????

There are a couple of smaller wires attached to the starters larger terminal. Those are called fusible links. It is likely those are what you hear pop.

Make sure there is continuity through those wires. If there is not they will need to be replaced.

They can not be replaced with regular wire. They need to be replaced with fusible link to protect the circuits they feed. Fusible link is readily available at your local parts store and they will be able to get you the correct size.

Let me know if you have any questions. Thank you for using FixYa.com!

Did you look for them at the starter?

There are two they are a brownish red in color. They are not vehicle specific and the guy behind the counter is more than likley not qualified to install a wiper blade!

this is what they look like (click on the link)http://partimages.genpt.com/largeimages/...

check your battery first, then check your ignition switch, then check your spark plugs and wires.

I keep blowing my PCM BAT fuse in my Lumina

you need to find the wire or component that is giving feedback into that system and then you can fix it. Putting a LARGER FUSE is only taking away the security of the system

This is a long shot, but I had a similar problem and it ended up being the that water pump locked up and caused it to jump time. Adjust timing and give her a crank.

I need the Hub Bearing Mounting Bolts for 1997 Chevy Lumina LS

You can get those bolts in any scrapyard really cheap. If you are replacing only one strut, it may be better to get a used one as well otherwise the car may sit lopsided.(if you buy it with spring still on, it's quicker and easier to install too!!)
It likely interchanges with a lot of other GM models and should also be available at any scrapyard. You don't need part number, just tell them what you want and they will know. (it's their business)

O2 sensor

1. first you need to re-set your computer. Try disconnecting the Negative battery cable for 5 minutes. If that does not reset itself, then you must go to someone with a scanner/engine analyzer & have it reset by them. Then after running it for a little while (few minutes or a few blocks) it needs to be rescanned for new trouble codes in order to see what all you did or did not get fixed to start with.
Note: .... there are LOTS of auto suppliers who will scan it for free if you buy your parts for them and or some of them will loan you the scanner to test it yourself (on their lot-location).

1996 chevy lumina battery or alternator?

If you think its the battery, have a load test done to it, any repair shop can do that they can also chk. the alternator. If its the alt. he can do it but it would be best to have a little supervision because of the electrical connections. But first make sure the battery cables are clean and tight, Its possible thats all it is, unhook cables in this order neg. first than pos. mix some baking soda and water and clean the mating surface of each cable and battery surface but be carefull its highly carrosive or you can clean them with a wire brush, when clean reattach in this order pos. first than neg. If you need more help just ask. I got kids too.

I bet your brakes are rusted to the rotors /drums. There's is a lot of metal in brake friction materials these days.Take off the wheels and give the brake drums and calipers a few wraps with a ball peen hammer. That should do it.
