I have just had the "low coolant level" come on. However, there's lots of coolant (it doesn't mean freon, does it?) and the oil is fine, gauges all reading normal. The heater is set to the highest setting, but it just blows icy cold air and the slight smell of something similar to radiator steam, although there isn't any when I open the hood. Did you experience anything like this before you had to replace the entire cooling system? I know it's a different year, but doubt there's much difference between them - mine's a Special Edition also, if that makes any difference at all.
It sounds like your heater core is plugged or shot thats why it blows cold. that smell your smelling is rad fluid that is leaking from your heater core into the car. the heater core is located behind your dash board, htats all i can tell you i've never done a heater core in a achieva before, good luck

Is the coolant level staying full/constant? Could just be a stuck closed thermostat...the 3.4 motor is known for bad water pumps...a low cost repair on your Olds...check for leaks...try (when engine cold) be sure coolant in the radiator is full...may need to bleed the coolant system at the bleeder valve...(trapped air)
They make that kind of noise if its low on fluid, and also depending on how cold it is they will make a lot of noise because the colder it is the thicker the oil is and the harder it is to pump. I am not there to hear the starter, If the starter is making noise it will only be audiable while your on start, i dought starter will make that noise while its running unless the drive is sticking . Have both the pump and starter chk.out.
Engine light stays on, low coolant light stays on , recently had a plastic housing replaced that was leaking, it was linked to thermostat, tranmission coolant, heater ect. Had the thermostat replaced also. Level of coolant is fine, does't overheat anymore, but now the starter wants to spin a couple of times and then it starts. The car has no rust, would like to hang on to it
Sounds like the heater core is leaking, at least the smell, the other is either the cooling system has air trapped in it from a head gasket leak, or the sensor that turns on the light is defective, is the coolant clean? It will be one of 3 colors, red, green or yellow, rusty looking is very bad.
