We dont know details about your model; the solenoid, or on some starters, just a threaded part of the armature, pushes the bendix gear forward an inch or so until it meshes with the ring gear, allowing the starter motor to spin the engine over until it starts. When the engine rpm exceeds the cranking speed, the bendix automatically retracts, preventing the engine from spinning the starter too fast.

At least that's how it works in theory. Starter motor failure is rarely caused by a blown or shorted motor itself - usually it's a problem with the bendix mechanism or the solenoid. And frankly, most people will never need to replace a starter motor for the life of their vehicle. Intrepid but underfunded Saturday Mechanics might actually dismantle a malfunctioning starter and repair it themselves. You can still find auto parts stores that can get you new bearings, brushes and bendix assemblies. Generally, I just exchange the old starter for a new or remanufactured one, because repairing one doesn't save much money. On the other hand, if you have a rare or hard-to-find starter it might be necessary to fix what you have. Usually, auto electric shops can rebuild or repair a starter with a bad armature, shorted field windings, bad brushes, a bad commutator, or even a bad solenoid if there is no alternative

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using FixYa, have a nice day.

Why won't it start?

did you replace it with a new starter or a wrecker starter, maybe a bad starter. check the teeth on the flywheel they maybe damaged causing the starter not to engage. you may have to shim the starter. were there any shims when you pulled the original starter off.

Starter on my 91 ford ranger 4 wheel drive starts my pickup a couple time then it just spins have changed it 3 times now

Assuming the starter motor spins but doesn't engage to turn engine over to start you could have a bad starter drive which is part of the starter assembly or possibly damaged/missing teeth on flywheel ring gear. Depending on year and model vehicle, some starters you can replace just the starter drive otherwise you need to replace the whole starter. If you changed the starter look at the flywheel.

STARTER PROBLEMS

It can be faulty starter or there is loose connection from battery to starter. The starter assembly gets power from battery. Check voltages at starter wires and see if you are getting 12 volts or not. If not then its no power issue due to low battery volt or no connection between battery to starter.

Starter location

Its in engine compartment under hood.
On the lower side.
First test the starter before directly replacing it.

Starter will not turn

Does the starter make one click when you turn the key to the start position? If so, your starter solenoid contacts are worn/burnt. You can either replace the starter (expensive), or remove the starter & have the contacts replaced (inexpensive); Starter contact replacements are a common repair item.
