Question about Cars & Trucks
I have a 96 grand cherokee w a 4.0 engine and when it starts the engine revs to about 2 to 2200 RPM. and doen't kick down also it wont shift into O/D all the time. It had been in a wreck and a old computer module had been put in and not sure if it came from the exact same engine but has worked fine for about 4000 mi could it possibly be the module or is there an adjustment to slow down the RPM's
There is no idle speed adjustment. Do you have any fault codes in the PCM memory? Does the engine have any vacuum leaks, that will cause a high idle, use a can of carburetor spray and spray around the intake manifold, if the engine idle speed changes you have a leak and have found the problem. You could also have a sticking automatic idle speed control valve in the throttle body.

Engine stall or RPM fluctuates
This problem is commonly caused by a dirty automatic idle speed control valve and throttle valve. Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (do not use carburetor spray cleaner!) from NAPA or Carquest (made by CRC chemicals) and spray it into the air intake while the engine is running, use up about 1/2 the can, engine will try to stall hold the speed up, shut it down and let it soak for 30 minutes, restart and blow out the remaining fluid, shut it down and disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 Min's to reset the base idle control
