Question about 1998 Ford Explorer
I would suggest you have the fuel pressure monitored while driving, this takes special equipment. Also have a functional test run on the engines automatic idle speed control system, you could have a defective idle speed control valve.

possible fuel pump. Try spraying starting fluid into breather while someone is cranking engine. if vehicle tries to run it is fuel problem. If not it could be an electrical componet overheating and cooling and restarting. Coils, relays, ecm.

Sounds like a bad I.A.C. (idle air control) motor, or I.A.C. switch located on the side of the throttle body (dr. side) if i remember correctly. I ran into this on a '97 sport i used to own, if you go to remove it the screws (phillips head) are usually in there pretty tight. Keep me posted on if it helps.

if the engine dies at idle like when you hit the brakes at a stop light, most likely itis your IAC idle air control valve. It's the little cyllindrical valve has 2 bolts and an electrical plug located on your throttle body. Unplug it and unbolt. I cleaned mine thoroughly with parts cleaner and also lubricatd with wd40 and put it back on about 18000 miles ago and not an issue yet. fixed my problem. I ll get a new next time
