You cannot run an external regulator on this, your only solution is to replace the ECM.

White smoke would be an idication of coolant in the combustion chamber. Check coolant level, check oil to see if it is a milky color.May be a leaking head gasket or possible oil cooler leaking. Let me know if this helpful

SOURCE: where is the voltage regulator located in 99 merrcury cougar

now days all voltage regulators are incorporated into the alternator. so if you have charging problems it is more then likely the alternator is bad, or needs a rebuild. good-day !

No way to do this, the alternator is not made/engineered to use an off alternator external voltage regulator. Why would you need to do this?

Need to know where voltage regulator is on 99 E150 van 4.2L.

A long long time ago in a galaxy far far away the voltage regulator hung on the the fender well or on the firewall under the hood. Then they built it into the alternator, and it has remained there since.

99 mustang fuel gage stuck on half, low fuel light works

If the gauge remains in one position, on or off, full or empty, then it may be a bad gauge, or a faulty voltage regulator for the gauge. If the instrument panel is removed, there is a printed circuit on the back which ties to all gauges and lights. Check it for breaks or corrosion. The voltage regulator should be mounted to the same area and supplies regulated voltage to the fuel gauge. Hope this helps!

The voltage regulator is a part of the alternator. If you are having pulsating issues then look for grounding issues like a corrided eyelet or loose grounding bolts.
