Telescoping steering column

How do you remove a steering wheel on an 88 caddilac brougham with the telescoping steering. The release lever for the telescopic adjustment covers the nut holding the steering wheel on.

Must have a special tool to compress the spring so you can insert the retaining ring in the groove above the lock plate.

SOURCE: I need a diagram for a 1965 cadillac tilt telescoping column

Dave , I have one in my cj5. The info I got on it was that it was out of a Cadillac Fleetwood from 69-1976. I was able to get a switch from Rock auto for it.It is basicly the same as any other GM column. They were also use in other gm models in those years. Larry n6ifp@sbcglobal.net

A control module ! Electronics The steering column has a tilt/telescoping control system that consists of an electronic control module capable of class 2 serial data communication, a steering column power assembly with positioning motor and sensor, and a steering column control switch. The multi-function lever provides for the control of the headlamp high beams, and the windshield washer and wiper.
The tilt/telescoping steering column in/out/up/down switch is an input to the driver position module (DPM). The tilt/telescoping drive motor is an output function of the DPM.
Steering column memory settings are stored in the DPM. The steering column position sensor is an internal part of the tilt/telescoping motor assemblies, and is an input to the DPM. The DPM uses the position sensor input when storing and recalling memory settings.
Same thing with the seats , electronic control module .
Battery positive voltage is supplied at all times to the memory seat module (MSM) through the battery positive voltage circuit from the POWER SEATS circuit breaker located instrument panel (I/P) fuse block. This voltage is used to power up MSM and also to apply power to the seat motors when commanded. Battery positive voltage from the TILT/TELE SW/MEM SEAT MOD fuse located in the body control module (BCM) fuse block that supplies voltage to the seat adjuster switch and the memory function switch, also supplies voltage to the MSM. The MSM monitors this voltage circuit in order to determine if battery voltage is supplied to the seat adjuster switch. The MSM is grounded through the module ground circuit and G301.

Adjust the Mercedes telescoping steering wheel to the maximum extended position (maximum out position).
Move the front driver's seat to the rear-most position.
Disconnect the negative battery cable by loosening the retaining nut on the negative battery cable clamp and sliding the clamp off the battery terminal.
Remove the screws on the underside of the instrument panel cluster that hold the instrument cluster cowl in place and remove the cowl.
Remove the four screws holding the instrument cluster in place and remove the instrument cluster from the dash. Make sure to remove the electrical connectors from the back of the instrument cluster before trying to completely remove the cluster.
Turn the ignition key to the "I" position and remove the electrical plug in the back of the ignition switch. The switch should be exposed now that the cowl and instrument cluster have been removed. You will access the plug from the top of the ignition switch and cylinder assembly.
Loosen, but do not remove, the Allen bolt on top of the ignition cylinder that mates with the steering column using an Allen wrench.
Remove the two 13 mm bolts on top of the steering column. This will allow the steering column to drop down roughly 3 inches so that you can access the release button for the ignition switch.
Press the release button on the steering column where the ignition cylinder enters the column.
Turn the key to the "I" position and remove the ignition cylinder and switch assembly by pulling it out of the steering column.
Remove the ignition wiring from the back of the ignition switch and cylinder assembly by pressing down on the release tab on the electrical connector and pulling it off the switch.

R&R Steering column in 89 Jeep Cherokee base model. Cannot get replacement column to meet up with connecting shaft to steering box. Seems to short.


Most of these columns are telescoping to some extent, to absorb impact energy in a crash when something(such as you without a seat belt) hits them. Often, when the are removed from a vehicle they get collapsed. Pull on the connection end of the shaft, while someone holds the steering wheel end firmly. I don't know for sure if this is your problem, but it's somewhere to start.

How do you remove a 1987 Ford Econoline ignition switch assembly

  1. Set the parking brake.
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  3. Disconnect the flexible coupling from the steering shaft flange.
  4. Disconnect the shift linkage rod(s) from the column.
  5. Remove the steering wheel. NOTE: If you have a tilt column, the steering wheel MUST be in the full UP position when it is removed.
  6. Remove the floor cover screws at the base of the column.
  7. Remove the steering column shroud by loosening the bottom screw and placing the shift lever in the No.1 position (on automatics) and pulling the shroud up and away from the column.
  8. Remove the instrument cluster column opening cover.
  9. Remove the 2 bolts securing the column support bracket to the pedal support bracket.
  10. Disconnect the turn signal/hazard warning harness and the ignition switch harness.
  11. Lift the column from the truck. To install:
  12. Position the column in the van.
  13. Connect the wiring.
  14. Insert the column through the floor so that the flange engages the flexible coupling, then, raise the column and loosely install the bracket bolts.
  15. Loosely install the flexible coupling nuts and floor plate screws.
  16. Install the steering wheel.
  17. Adjust the steering column as follows:
    1. Tighten the flexible coupling nuts to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
    2. Place the wheels in the straight-ahead position.
    3. Verify the safety pin-to-flange cut-out clearance of 0.160 in. with a feeler gauge.
    4. If necessary, loosen the flange nuts to adjust the clearance, then retighten the nuts when clearance is established.
    5. Tighten the column support bracket bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
    6. Tighten the cover plate screws to 10 ft. lbs. (13.6 Nm).
    7. Tighten the lower clamp bolt to 10 ft. lbs. (13.6 Nm).

How do you remove the ignition lock cylinder on a 1991 chevy cavalier


The ignition switch removal and installation procedure is given in , under steering, because the steering wheel must be removed for access to the ignition switch.

To remove the ignition lock:
CAUTION
You must remove the steering wheel when replacing the ignition lock. On vehicles with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system, you must temporarily disable the SIR system and remove the inflator module when removing the steering wheel. Leaving the SIR system on could result in deployment of the air bag and possible personal injury.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable, and remove the steering wheel.
  • Remove the bumper and the carrier snapring retainer from the steering shaft.
  • Use a lock plate compressor screw tool to install the lock plate compressor screw in the upper steering shaft. To keep the shaft from telescoping, tighten it to 40 inch lbs.
  • Using the lock plate compressor tool, install on the upper steering shaft, tighten it to depress the shaft lock. Remove the shaft lock retainer, the compressor tool and the steering shaft lock.
  • Remove the turn signal canceling cam assembly. Put the turn signal switch in the "N" position and remove the upper bearing spring.
  • Position the turn signal switch so the mounting screws can be removed through the holes in the switch and remove the turn signal lever.
  • Remove the turn signal switch-to-steering column screws and lift the turn signal switch. Remove the wire protector and disconnect the turn signal switch connector.
  • Use a terminal remover tool to disconnect the buzzer switch wires from the turn signal switch connector. Remove the buzzer switch assembly with needle-nose pliers.
  • Place the lock cylinder in the ACC position, then remove the lock retaining screw and the lock cylinder set.
  • To install the new cylinder lock, reverse the removal procedures.
  • Tighten the lock retaining screw to 22 inch lbs., the turn signal switch screws to 59 inch lbs. and turn the turn signal lever screw to 53 inch lbs.
  • As part of the final replacement procedures, check the operation of the switches and the steering column.

I have a 2008 Ford Fusion, and have a clunking noise in my front end. It only occurs when I apply the breaks at a slow speed, usually when turning around in a driveway or parkinglot. I dont hear the noise...


I have a 2006 Mazda 6 wagon - same car under the skin as your fusion. If you have a telescoping steering wheel, it might be that the grease they used for the steering column is substandard. I just fixed my clunky steering by releasing the telescoping/tilt lever and pushing the steering wheel in and out a few times (i repeated twice after 2 short test drives with the problem improving each time); this eliminated the noise. Blogs for the Mazda 6 indicated this. Give it a try as it's a free fix. If the problem comes back, and some indicate it will, the dealer may need to relubricate the steering column with a better grease. This is the fix for the Mazda6.

Grinding noise when telescoping steering retracts.


There is a technical service bullitin for this problem. They just replace the linkeage, and also the motor. Very common problem.
