Question about 1999 BMW 328 Series

1 Answer

Electrical Problems I have had many electrical issues with htis car which appears to stem from the control box under the hood. Warning lights turning on/off at misc intervals, radio freaking out, etc. Engine runs great, though. Is there anything I can do to help solve this problem. Once my wipers stopped working and I pressed on the molex connectors and have never had that problem again. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

my inside signal lights won't work but they work outside. My radio/cd player will scan and I can't use any of the radio control buttons. Dashboard will show I have a door or trunk open when everything is closed. Can't dispense windshield wiper fluid. But the car runs great!

Check the ground wire beween the battery. and the fuse box. you might have ground wire attached to the fire wall.

1999 S70 Turbo - radio went out then five warning lights came on. Radio went off and I continued to drive without issues other than warning lights. 60 mi later radio went off and speedometer dropped from...

On a web search I found several people that had similar weird dash lights/operation issues. Someone thought it might be a faulty ignition switch but that was not it. The success came as follows:
"Alright fixed the problem it was an electrical relay. If you remove the cover of the fuse box under the hood there are 4 large relays. two of them are unmarked as to what they are for but I disconnected them while the car and everything was running and it turned out that one was for the lights and the other was for the interior electrical components A/C, Radio, wipers, etc. I replaced the one that I needed and all is well now. Thanks for the help $20 for a problem that had me ready to sell the car."
Your issue may be similar .. a faulty relay in the fuse/relay box under the hood...which I think is just forward of the driver side wheel well. Usually there is a legion/map on the underside of the lid that tells you what each relay and fuse is.
Good luck on your troubleshooting

The air is not cool when idling, it blows warm. Also the setting 1 and 2 doesnt work, only 3 and for makes air blow.

Sounds like 2 different problems here. The ac gets warm when standing idle, is most likely the under hood fan not kicking on when ac is on. This may be a fuse issue or a relay. When ac is on, the fan should be on all the time. Relay maybe in an electrical box under the hood. Unplug the fan and test for power with a test light to see if the fan has power when ac is "on".

The inside fan not working on levels 1& 2 is likely the voltage ballast issue. this is an electrical block which controls voltage to change fan speeds. Usually found under the passenger side dash, right in the air flow comming from the fan and inside the air flow housing. Usually held in by 2 or 3 screws with a connector and 3-4 wires sticking out. this should be under $20 to buy and quite easy to change, if you can find it. Try behind glove box etc. Do not test the new one without it being in place, as it may burn out very quickly without the air flow to cool it.
Good luck

Electrical gremlins

it could be something as simple as moisture in one of the plugs, or something as complex as a broken wire inside the harness, or a loose ground wire. i would begin by checking the ground wires to the body and the ecu (computer)

My 99' volvo v70 continually flashes the traction control and abs warning light and the speedometer stops working the trip meter and the odometer go blank than all of a sudden it will start working again...

Sounds like a bad ABS control module is at least part of your problem. The symptoms are usually and ABS and TRACS light intermittent or constand and eventually your speedometer works intermittently or totally quits. This guy rebuilds/upgrades them for about $140. New ones run over $800.

Electrical problems

sounds like the brake light switch is the culprit for both the intermittent brake lights and cruise control problems. the engine warning light could be an unrelated issue that needs to be diagnosed.

Open Hood warning, and wiper blades.

There is a switch on your hood latch. They get damaged sometimes when the hood opens and closes. look down on the latch and you will see the sensor with an electrical plug. There are two 10mm bolts holding the latch in. remove them and the sensor is in the latch.

Car won't start

Have you checked your starter? You should take it out and take it to Kragen and have them do a electrical test on it. It is free and they will be able to tell you if that is the problem
