Question about 2003 Ford Expedition
Speedometer starts sticking after about 14mph. It will jump up in 3-4mph incremints. I replaced the speed sensor in the trans and it seemed to fix it. I drove it for 3 or 4 miles and then parked it. Next trip same day it started sticking agian. Has me stumped if it worked for a little bit there. Thought it would be either speed sensor or stepper motor on speedometer but I am a little confussed with the temp workage. Any help would be great.
The speedometer in this truck is electronic, the needle is moved by a tiny electric motor called the speedometer needle stepper motor, a stepper motor is a DC motor than can hold one position rather than just rotate when power is applied to it. You will need to remove the instrument cluster from the truck and send it in to a Ford electronics repair center that repairs speedometers.

your spedo cable is probably just loose which can be fixed by tightening or replaceing. Might as well go ahead and replace it since its a 14 year old truck and its the more sure fire way to fix the bounce.

SOURCE: Fluctuating Speedometer
The speed senser is mounted on the transmission. This device is an slocrto magnatic motor and they cost less than $100 there held in with one bolt and have an electrical connector. Many times if it's bad enough the check engine light will come on. This problem but the heating up but work OK cild is a good chance the senser has failed.. The trans mission should be checked for overheating as the senser failure will be heal related
