2004 Rodeo Misfire on Cylinder 4

I have a 2004 rodeo with 3.5ltr. The engine has been missing for a quite some time while excillerating and now my check engine light is finally stuck on, so I can find out what it is and it says, it's a misfire on Cylinder 4. What's the possiblity of a Denso Iridium SXU16HPR9 spark plug going bad at 40,000mi? Can you tell me which plug is on Cylinder 4? I have checked the two middle ones and front left and they seem to look ok and as far as I can tell the cables look ok too. Can they look ok and still be bad? It starts fine and seems to idle ok too.

Thank you for the info. I replaced the plug on cyl 4 even though I didn't see any evidence. I also don't see any evidence of fire going down side of procelain. It seemed to have more power and I had the code erased. It started acting up again, but not as bad. The check engine light came on again, but didn't stay on. It still said misfire cyl 4. When it starts flashing I take my foot off the peddle and it smoths out and goes away. Still sould like wire or something else.

I swapped out the coil wire with front drivers side erased code and it still says misfire on cyl 4 P0304. Any other ideas? Seems to hesitate more when cold and on acceleration. Intermittent.

  • Damundson Oct 24, 2008

Plug wire and coil are one piece and shows no evidence of burning.

The coil and boot are one piece. See full view. This is what I swapped out.

I am thinking I may have to resort to taking it in. I cannot get to injector four with long screw driver and there are no exposed wires on the connector or the coil to check with volt meter.

Thank you for all your help!!

If you think of anything else let me know!!

I have not brought in to service station yet. I put fuel injector cleaner in on a full tank yesterday. How long does it take to start working? I have driven about 15mi and still no difference. Do you have a diagram of my 3.5ltr with component locations? I am still determined to find the cyl 4 injector to see if it is clicking off and on.

  • Damundson Oct 29, 2008

Do you have a diagram or manual that shows how to get to the Fuel Injector?

  • Damundson Oct 29, 2008

Under the cover is some kind of manifold or something. If I remove it, I am guessing there are gaskets to replace. I will try to get a hold of a camera and send a picture with the cover off.

Cylinder 4 is on the drivers side it is middle plug goes 2,4,6. it is possible for plug to go bad at mileage. look on the side of plug see if you can see a black mark on side this will be evidence of fire going down side of porcelain also look on plug wire for any trace of arcing. it is most likely a bad plug or wire on cyl 4

YES sounds like a wire see if you can swap wire with another cylinder and if code reads misfire on that cyl you will know for sure it is wire

ok this has the 6 coil packs on each plug. you swapped the coils or just the boots? if just the boots then swap coil with another cylinder.and check and see if misfire moves to that cyl

Good morning, I have a 2004 Isuzu Rodeo in which I have always gotten the proper worker done on time. I'm currently at 90,000 miles and my engine light is on. My truck jerks as if it doesn't want to go...

You have an apparent misfire that has to be troubleshooted correctly. At the mileage you have, you should have changed the plugs, wires (if it has them), cap and rotor (if it has them). Beyond that would take some technical diagnostics.

P0300 and P0303 misfire codes 2004 Isuzu Rodeo 3.5L

so missfire detected and cylinder 3 missfire detected.
check to see injector pulse with "noide light" if ok injector is problem
remove fuel rail and injectors look into top of injector for blockage in screen filter in injector if blocked clean out or injector carby places can remove this screen replace it and test injectors and clean or just buy new injectors. make sure to clean out fuel rail and change fuel filter also.
if noide light flashes irratic or not at all wiring issue, check for power on one wire with ignition on 12v other is earthed by ecu when opened to inject fuel. other thing that can cause problem on cylinder is tappet clearance "shims" too tight, could do compression test to see if compression is low on cylinder or a cylinder leakage test to see if valves are leaking. broken valve spring. valves do not hit piston on these engines even if cam belt breaks, they are a "free wheeling" engine

1996 isuzu rodeo keeps reading #2 misfire runs good xcept when cold it hesitates most times or jus occasionally hesitates then the check engine light flashes and its guzzling gas i only got 50 miles on a...

A misfire alarm typically means the coil pack mounted above the sparkplug indicated in the misfire had gone defective.

To test it, swap the coil pack with another cylinder, and see if the misfire goes from #2 to the cylinder you put it on.

If the misfire continues to be on #2, then consider changing the sparkplugs.

I hope this helps.

Which cylinder do I use to set the timing in a 2.2L Isuzu rodeo?

All timing on engines is always done on Number 1 cylinder. On an inline engine it is the very front cylinder nearest to the radiator. On a transverse engine it is the cylinder nearest to the belt drive pulleys.

2004 Isuzu Rodeo 3.5ltr 4X4 hesitation/misfire acceleration

The upper intake gaskets may be leaking. They are made of plastic and metal and will leak air. Do not remove the cover on very top of manifold when changing.
