Question about 2001 Cadillac DeVille

1 Answer

Po386 I've had the crank sensor a replaced once and the b sesor twice, thinking that the sesor was defective from manufacturer I took it back to checker auto parts.after replacement the second time I took to a variety of emission specialist, icluding cadillacs and no one seems to know what the problem is. they say the sensors are fine. but in emissions the failure is due to po386 which is crank sensor "B" performance. Is there anyone that might be familiar with trhis?

How do I go about repairing it? Up untill this point I amfair game for certain few mechanics that consider me fair game for over pricing, realizing that I can't drive without repairs.

How do I determine which is which? The battery is brand new,the sensor is new and there is no drag in my starter. So I am left with a fault in my wiring. how do i go about fixin it?

  • Steve Feb 07, 2012

I can't see why it would fail emissions over that code it not really related unless its causing the engine to run really rough.

I not sure how to proceed with finding the fault in the wiring .. Maybe try and replace the Crankshaft position sensor & also follow the wiring from the sensor to the computer if you can to see if there is a break.

Yes that is my sentiment exactly, the car run great,But since i have the ses light on here in arizona it's,an automatic failure. If I could get a diagram of the wire from the sensor to the pcm I could trace it myself. cadillacs charge $130.00 an hour and they say it's a four hour job!!!! Ridiculous. Any help would be appreciated. The sensor has been replaced twice. The sensor is fine.

For a wiring diagram you can see if a Haynes Manual has it for that car. I know they have few wiring diagrams but not sure if they have that detailed.

This is another option .. I am not sure if you have any Auto Values in Arizona or something like it they can clear the codes on the car which will remove the engine light. They usually do it free. Then you could take it in the shop hopefully the engine light does not come back on and gets passed. I had to do that on my wife's car here in Canada, Alberta.

Well I hope everything works out...

There are a few causes that can trip that code.

- Crankshaft position sensor harness is open or shorted
- Crankshaft position sensor circuit poor electrical connection
- Faulty crankshaft position sensor
- Signal plate may be damage
- Starter motor may be faulty
- Starting system circuit
- Dead or weak battery

Install new spark plugs, 4 new coils & replace the oxygen sensors

No idea why the coils do not last 5 or 6 years

Oxygen sensors reading wrong but brand new

I;ve had that problem with an AUDI because I had the MAF disconected. Make sur that all sensors related to combustion and emission control are connected and check again. If not then your sensors could be bogus.

95 Park Avenue Ultra dies for no reason I can find, I've replaced the crank sensor, cam ssensor, spark module, fuel filter, I've had the injectors tested, fuel pump tested, plugs & wires t

As you have probably figured out by now, you will have to treat it as a no start and troubleshoot it when it fails to start. Until you figure out if you are loosing spark or fuel to the injectors when the engine dies you have no direction to go in.

Before you replace the injectors have them do an injector balance test. Normally wet weather does not effect fuel system. Sounds more like you have a crank or cam sensor acting up.

Will the icm cause an po386 code

P0386 Crank position sensor "B" circuit range./performance. This is about performance. Is the sensor secured? How about sensor/rotor.The wiring? How about the air gap. Here is how the wiring works On cranksensor B you have three wire a yellow and a yellow and a light green. one of the yellow wire is ground, the other yellow ire is signal, the light green wire is 12 vlots or ignition voltage.when the key is on this is 12 volts. The 12 volts to the cranksensor is from the PCM and NOT the ICM3_20_2012_7_31_33_am.jpg

Po386 code still in computer but ses light is off. why is code still in computer

If the codes are not cleared from the computers memory they will remain indefinitely even though the check engine light is off. The fact the light is off means the problem has been repaired successfully. You can try disconnecting the battery or better yet use a code reader to clear the codes. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Thank you for using FixYa.com!

Cranks but won't start sometimes. Also has cut out while idleing in traffic and again cranks but won't start. car has new battery.

From what i've seen over the years with the Chryslers i've encountered. Your describing to the "T" what appears to be a bad Crank Sensor. I will bet money that if you replace the crank sensor it will solve your problem. BUT...Also know that a bad fuel pump can do exactly what you describe in your statement. Once the pump get hot it gets to acting stupid, but yet again so can the Crank Sensor. Still, my money is on the Crank Sensor.

What is code po386

It's the sensor. GM had a bad supplier from 2000 til early '03. Replace them both, unless you just want to practice for the next time. They are above the oil filter adapter which need to be removed. It's still a tight fit. Get some new oil filter adapter O rings to remount it.

My 2000 impala will not start. I've had my starter, batt, & engine all replaced. I've begin to suspect my auto theif system as the reason its not starting after a lot of online research, but...

I had a Nissan doing this to me a little while ago, but couldn't figure out the problem. A couple weeks later, the lady told me she took the car to a shop and they replaced the crank and cam sensors. My bet is that it was the crank sensor.
