Question about 2008 Saturn Sky

1 Answer

Completely shut down

It's not getting any juice, even trying to boost it didn't work. It is an automatic so everything is locked up when it is not running. I just got up one morning and it would not turn over. Now my key will not come out of the ignition. I beleive the battery is still strong by the way it sparked when I tried to boost it. So it is in my basement where I can't even get it towed. Please help!

I got out, turned the engine off, to use an ATM. When I tried to start the car it would not turn over, no clicking, no radio, no headlights, no display lights, just the reading lights and door locks operated. I jump started the car, drove home, everything seemed fine. I turned the car off and now it won't start again. No power to any systems. Help!

Hi Kraz8,

Thanks for asking me about your Saturn.
Saturn makes a great car, but they do have problems. I'm not sure I completely understand what you're experiencing though, especially the 'in the basement' thing. If what's happening is 'nothing' when you try to start it, your battery is charged and the key is acting weird then I can probably help.

I had a similar problem on my 94 SL2. Turn the key…..Nothing.
Even worse, it was intermittent, the worst type to troubleshoot.

At first it was rare. Pulling out the key , putting it back in and turning usually worked.
Over time it got progressively worse and stubborn.

Then one day it wouldn’t start for anything.

My car has an alarm with a ‘starter kill’. My first thought, alarm malfunction. So I located the two wires (they can be any color) going from the alarm module to the steering column. They are usually labeled appropriately on the module. I used a small jumper wire (alligator clips) to short them at the alarm. If the alarm was the problem, this would fix it. It didn’t.

Time to take apart the steering column.

The key tool will be a 7 or 8mm socket. Take off the two piece steering column shroud to expose the wiring.

On the left side, directly opposite the ignition, you’ll see a piece of round plastic held on with two bolts. This is really the ignition switch.
Take out the bolts (again 7 or 8mm).
Take out the two plugs (blue and white) from behind it.
Take off the switch.

Plan A: (For most people)
Replace this. Bring it with you to the parts store to compare it.
Bring it home. Bolt it on. Plug it in. Turn the key.

I can’t tell you how much it was , since I used …

Plan B: (For the deservedly cocky)
I took the switch apart and cleaned the contacts.
They were burnt. I scraped them clean, re-assembled the switch and tested it.
Vroom..

If you need me to explain Plan B, use Plan A.

Hope this helps, let me know how it goes. Any other problems, click the ASK button.

I have a 2002 dodge intrepid 3.5L does a bad Alternater cause a car not to idle

It could, but then your battery would soon be so dead that it couldn't crank the engine over when starting. You see, when an alternator fails the engine will still run off battery power till that is depleted, and then the engine shuts down, battery is dead, even quicker if anything besides the engine is using juice. The headlights or A/C will quickly run the battery down- you won't get 5 miles. I once had a Celebrity that the alternator went out just as we were leaving home, the ALT. light came on, wasn't the belt or slipping, had to see if I could get to the nearest parts store. I kept everything off, even the radio, only using the battery to run the engine. It was 55 miles and we made it there with juice to spare. New alternator and the battery still had enough power to start the engine, don't recall anyway that I had to get a boost. If it had been nighttime, I never would have tried it. I might be challenged, but I'm not crazy.

Easy to check your alternator with a voltmeter. Another cause of no idle is the idle air control motor or valve. It's on the throttle body assembly, and it just might need cleaning. I hope you find it, good luck.

It shut off a few times when i hit the brake and slowed down, then days later i tried to sart iy and it started and kept shutting off,now it wont even turn over, but i have juice to everything

It sounds to me like you have a bad starter and that it may have stayed engaged with the flywheel. When you slowed the vehicle the starter may have still been in contact with the flywheel causing it to stall from the extra drag on the engine. Subsequently when you started it days later the starter may have still been engaged, but cooled off. It was all symptomatic of a bad starter. Now it has not only lost the battle to start the van, but gone as far as to join the other side. Current is still passing through the electrical system to power everything, but the starter is probably now locked up tighter than my grandma's coin purse. I hope that helps. Take the starter out and have it checked. Please rate any answers you may receive and leave a testimonial. Thanks for using Fixya.

Went to start my 06 H3 and everything is dead. No electrical whatsoever. No I didn't leave any lights on. :) Now I can't even get the key to turn back all the way so I can't get the key out....

First check the battery connections. Make sure they are all clean and tight. Ground cable and connection to starter as well. Try getting a boost or put a charger on it. When you get it going, you'll have to check everything closely to make sure nothing is on. It is possible that the battery is just done, or the starter could be fried and just drained the battery. Let me know how you make out.

Yes, most likely a fault in the auto transmission, and the car has shut itself off to prevent further damage.

No electrical response when warm

Check your battery connections. If the terminals are corroded, it's possible that the computer isn't getting enough juice to operate properly which can cause a no-start condition even when everything else is cheking out ok.
