No a tie rod is a stearing component if it is mad you nead to fix it if it brakes it can cause you to
loose controle of your car.

How can I balance the front tie rods(inner & outer)?


The way to do this is with an alignment purchased at your friendly neighborhood service shop.
Trying to count threads on the tie rod (or other means not involving lasers) is not a reliable way to
align your 1997 Nissan pickup.
The tie rod ends are what a mechanic uses to set the toe-in/toe-out component of your alignment.
The other 2components of your alignment are caster and camber.

I didn't think there were tie rods in the back, since they are a steering component.

Tie rods are about $20-30 each, and you'll need four; two standard-thread, two reverse-thread. You'll also need a standard toolkit (socket wrenches, hammers, etc) and a tie rod seperator fork ($5 at Fleet Farm in the hand tools aisle, or you can rent a kit from Advance Auto Parts or Autozone).

Replacing tie rod end:
Remove the cotter pin. Loosen (but don't remove) the castle nut. Spray threads going to the adjusting sleeve with Kroyle or any other penetrating oil to make it easier to remove. Use the seperator fork to break the stud free - this is why you didn't remove the nut, so it doesn't just fly out. Now remove the castle nut and unscrew the tie rod. I used a large crescent wrench on the flat part of the head. If you can't tell whether it's going in or out, put some electrical tape on and see if it's going in or out (the reverse-threaded heads could be on either the inner or outer - it's not the same between each vehicle). Screw on replacement

Do that to the other 3, and take it back.

We just put a new tire rod on the front passenger side because we hit a pole, but the tire is still crooked outwards. is there a way that it might not be on all the way? the a frame was replaced too.


The tie rod may need to be adjusted to bring the tire back into proper alignment. There are actually three components to a tie rod system for these guys: an inner tie rod, an outer tie rod, and an adjuster sleeve that fits between the two. You can adjust the length of the tie rod via the adjusting sleeve. Provided the components are not rusted this is not a difficult task :) First loosen the two bolts at either end of the adjuster sleeve and then slowly turn the adjuster sleeve until the wheel is properly aligned. I generally use a large screw drive and just work carefully so as to not damage the sleeve itself. Once the wheel is sitting as it should re-tighten the bolts on the sleeve to make sure it doesn't walk itself out of alignment while driving. To recheck your alignment get a tape measure and check the distance between the tops, bottoms, fronts and rears of the tires. That's the easiest 'back yarder' way to get everything on the up and up.

Is a special tool required to remove inner tie rod from relay rod on 2001 Tahoe.? Also what should torque be?


Relay Rod Removal & Installation To Remove:
  1. Raise and support the vehicle
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Engine protection shield, if equipped
    • Steering damper from the relay rod, if equipped Note: Use the proper tool in order to separate all the tie rods and the ball joints.

    • Idler arm ball stud nut (J) and discard the nut (See: Idler Arm)
    • Pitman arm nut (H) and discard the nut (See: Pitman Arm) Remove the idler arm from the relay rod gm_trk_sub15_idler_from_relay_rod.gif

    • Relay rod from the idler arm ball stud using the J24319-B or other suitable puller Remove relay rod from pitman arm ball stud gm_trk_sub15_relay_rod_rem.gif

  3. Inspect the threads on the tie rod ends for damage

  6. Clean the threads on the ball studs
To Install:
  1. Install or connect the following:
    • Relay rod to the vehicle
    • Relay rod to the pitman arm ball stud
    • Relay rod to the idler arm ball stud and make sure the seal is on the stud
    • New pitman arm prevailing torque nut
    • New idler arm prevailing torque nut and tighten the idler arm and pitman arm nuts; Torque to: 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm)
    • Tie rod ends
    • Steering dampener to the relay rod, if equipped
    • Engine protection shield, if equipped
  2. Lower the vehicle
  3. Check the wheel alignment
  4. Test drive the vehicle to confirm the repairs

Power steering going bad,need info about rackard pinion


you can buy remanufactured at parts store or buy used from car-part.com. page with * is lowest cost.

It's a pretty big job for a novice.

here's 96 taurus steps with 3.8l engine. don't have 94. should be similar

Removal
SPECIAL SERVICE TOOL(S) REQUIRED Tool Number Description T94T-6000-AH Exhaust Connector Holder Tool T57L-500-B Bench Mounted Holding Fixture
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  1. Position steering wheel one-half turn to right and lock wheel.
  1. Position steering column boot out of the way. Remove pinch bolt retaining steering column intermediate shaft coupling to power steering short rack and separate.
  1. Disconnect PCV vent tube and vacuum supply hose from clean air tube. Loosen two hose clamps retaining clean air tube and position out of the way.
  1. Disconnect power steering auxiliary actuator and power steering pressure switch.
  1. Remove two heat shield pushpin retainers from power steering hose bracket and remove heat shield.
  1. Remove one retaining bolt from left turn pressure hose bracket.
  1. Position drain pan under steering gear.
  1. Remove power steering pressure and return hoses from fittings on power steering rack. Position both hoses out of the way. Disconnect rear HO2S connector at steering rack and position out of the way.
  1. Partially raise vehicle.
  1. Remove front wheel and tire assemblies.
  1. Remove LH upper stabilizer bar link retaining nut and position link out of the way.
  1. Loosen LH tie-rod jam nut. Remove cotter pin and tie-rod retaining nut at lower control arm. Using tie-rod end separator or equivalent, remove tie-rod from control arm and from steering gear.
  1. Loosen RH tie-rod jam nut. Remove cotter pin and tie-rod retaining nut at lower control arm. Using tie-rod end separator or equivalent, remove tie-rod from control arm and from steering gear.
  1. Raise vehicle.
  1. Remove drain pan.
  1. Remove two steering gear retaining nuts at front subframe.
  1. Install Exhaust Connector Holder Tool T94T-6000-AH on flex tube.
  1. Remove bolts, nuts, and gasket from where flex tube and converter Y-pipe connect. Separate tube from pipe.
  1. Position Rotunda Power Train Lift 014-00765 or equivalent with wood blocks approximately 1016 mm (40 inches) in length (secured to lift) under subframe and raise.
  1. Remove two rear subframe retaining bolts and lower subframe approximately 102 mm (4 inches).
  1. Rotate power steering rack to clear bolts from subframe and remove assembly through LH wheel well.
  1. Remove two bolts retaining power steering hose bracket to short rack and remove bracket.
  1. Mount steering gear assembly in Bench Mounted Holding Fixture T57L-500-B.
  1. Remove four clamps retaining bellows to steering gear and tie-rods. Remove bellows and power steering gear rack tube.
  1. Position rack and pinion steering gear so several steering gear teeth are exposed. Hold steering gear with adjustable wrench on end teeth only, while loosening inner tie-rods. Remove tie-rods from steering rack. Remove steering rack from bench-mounted holding fixture.
Installation
  1. Mount new steering gear assembly in Bench Mounted Holding Fixture T57L-500-B.
  1. Position rack and pinion steering gear so several steering gear teeth are exposed. Hold steering gear with adjustable wrench on end teeth only, while tightening inner tie-rods. Tighten to 90-110 Nm (66-81 lb-ft).
  1. Apply Steering Gear Grease C3AZ-19518-A meeting Ford specification ESB-M1C119-A to groove in connecting rods where tie-rod bellows clamp to front wheel spindle tie-rod and uniformly apply to inner diameter of bellows. Install bellows and gear rack tube onto short rack.
  1. Install new inner and outer bellows clamps.
  1. Remove steering gear from Bench Mounted Holding Fixture and place on bench.
  1. Install power steering hose bracket and retaining bolts at top of steering gear. Tighten to 9-12 Nm (80-106 lb-in).
  1. Install steering gear retaining bolts in steering gear housing and install short rack through LH wheel well.
  1. Position steering rack and retaining bolts through subframe. Raise powertrain lift until rear subframe contacts body and install retaining bolts. Tighten to 135-195 Nm (100-144 lb-ft). Lower and remove powertrain lift from vehicle.
  1. Install power steering short rack-to-subframe nuts. Tighten to 97-132 Nm (72-97 lb-ft).
  1. Install new gasket, bolts and nuts at converter Y-pipe and flex tube. Tighten to 34-46 Nm (26-34 lb-ft).
  1. Remove flex tube holder.
  1. Partially lower vehicle.
  1. Install LH jam nut and outer tie-rod to inner tie-rod. Install tie-rod to steering knuckle. Install retaining nut. Tighten to 47-63 Nm (35-46 lb-ft). Install new cotter pin.
  1. Install LH stabilizer bar link and retaining nut. Tighten to 76.5-103.5 Nm (57-76 lb-ft).
  1. Install RH jam nut and outer tie-rod to inner tie-rod. Install tie-rod to steering knuckle. Install retaining nut. Tighten to 47-63 Nm (35-46 lb-ft). Install new cotter pin.
  1. Install tire and wheel assemblies. Tighten to 115-142 Nm (85-105 lb-ft).
  1. Lower vehicle.
  1. Remove old Teflon® O-rings from pressure and return hoses. Install new Teflon® O-rings on pressure and return hoses.
  1. Install power steering pressure hose and return hose to fittings on power steering short rack. Tighten to 33-41 Nm (24-30 lb-ft).
  1. Install one retaining bolt to left-turn pressure hose bracket. Tighten to 9-12 Nm (80-106 lb-in).
  1. Connect rear HO2S connectors, power steering auxiliary actuator, and power steering pressure switch electrical connectors.
  1. Position heat shield at power steering hose bracket and install pushpin retainers.
  1. Install clean air tube, connect PCV vent tube and vacuum supply hose, and tighten hose clamps. Tighten to 2-3 Nm (18-27 lb-in).
  1. Install steering column intermediate shaft coupling to power steering short rack and install pinch bolt. Tighten to 41-51 Nm (30-38 lb-ft). Position steering column boot over steering rack.
  1. Fill and purge system.
  1. Check operation.
  1. Adjust only toe for alignment. Refer to Section 04-00 .

My 2003 ford tauras shakes so bad on highway


I would have that front end checked as soon as possible. It could be anything, ball joints, tie rod ends, cv joints, could be the rack and pinion steering. If any one of these things break, you will loose your steering.

Tie rod inner or outter/how to install


here is word for word what the manual says:

REMOVAL:
1. Loosen the front wheel lug nuts on the side to be dismanteld. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands. CAUTION: If the vehicle is equipped with Automatic Ride Control (ARC), make sure the air suspention switch is turned to the OFF position before the vehicle is riased to prevent damage to the system components.

2. Remove the front wheel.

3. Remove the cotter pin and loosen the nut on the tie-rod end stud. Discard the cotter pin.

4. Disconnect the tie-rod end fron the steering spindel with a Pitman arm puller.

5. Loosen the tie-rod end jam nut and back it off several turns.

6. Apply a paint mark to the theads adjacent to the adjusting sleeve or tie-rod end. Unscrew the tie-rod end from the adjusting sleeve or connecting rod.

INSTALLATION:
7. Install the tie-rod end into the adjusting sleeve or connecting rod. Thread the tie-rob end in until the marks made on step 6 align.

8. Install the tie-rod end to the spindle. Make sure the front wheels and steering wheel are in the stright ahead position. Make sure the tie-rod stud is seated in the taper to prevent it from turing while tightening the nut.

9. Install the new nut on the stud and tighent it to the proper torque (45-60 ft-lbs). Install a new cotter pin and bend the ends over completely.

10. Tighten the tie-rod adjusting sleever clap bolts or jam nut to 50-68 ft-lbs. Make sure the tie-rod is posistioned correctly in the same posistion it was in before it was removed.

11. Install the wheel and lug nuts. Lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts.

12. get the front end aligned.
