I just changed the air filter and my daughter said that made the starting problem worse ! (it's her car).I am going to change the gas filter next, but i thought if it was bad it would cause problems on high demand, like accelerating up steep hills, which we have two of here and use every day.

    THANK-U

Dosn't sound like an ignition problem. Seems like something with air/fuel mixture. Meaning, not enough fuel or air getting to the motor. I'ld start checking the simple things, clogged filters for example.

Like I said, odds are air fuel mixture. So if it's worse, you're probally right on not enough fuel. So either fuel filter or pump.

Nothing, you have hit the rev limiter. The up and down is the computer controlling the rpm. If you drive it, it should rev past 3,000. The computer is designed to keep free wheeling rpm to that level. It will only allow a higher rpm if vehicle is in gear and moving with a load.

When starting, engine will rev up to 3000 rpm then will die. but you can keep it running if you keep it revved up above 3000 rpm

Things to look for: Could be your intake manifold gasket, throttle position sensor, vacuum hoses, throttle body gasket, idle screw, fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator, or maybe you have a split in your gas tank or fuel line(s) that is messing with your fuel pressure. See if you smell gas back near the driver's side rear wheel.

Good luck, those are things I would search for, I can't promise anything, could be a number of things. You should have a check engine light on.

Will start and run if I rev the engine but will not hold idel.

It could be the throttle body gasket. The gasket gets old and hard and will leak between the throttle body and intake manifold. Also check for vacuum lines that are broken or split.
