Discharges and stalls when i stop at stop light, new battey, new alt. starts right back up, ????

Hi Stephen, Im AL the owner of Big As Auto Repair.

Three things Stephen. (1) Check for any vacuum leaks around the intake manifold and the throttle body by spraying carb cleaner if engine speed changes you have a leak. (2) Check the Idle Air Control Motor, If its has debris build up where it mates inside the throttle body it can cause the engine to die at stops. Clean and replace it and see what happens. (3) EGR Valve, if your vehicle is equipped with an EGR Valve here's how to check it because a leaking EGR can also cause dying at stops. Check it with a CARB CLEANER, spray it directly into where the diagram area is and if the engine stumbles then replace it. Hope this is helps and please visit my auto-repair-website at: http://www.bigasautorepair.com/

Car cuts out after 3 miles and starts back up until the next stop light.

Hi John, Im AL the owner of Big As Auto Repair.

John, when the engine dies at stop lights, there are several things that can cause this issue. (1) The engine could have a vacuum leak, you can check this by spraying carb-cleaner around the intake manifold. (2) The Idle Air Control Motor could be either sticking or carbon build up where it mates inside the throttle body. You can check this by tapping on the motor and see if it starts to idle correctly, if it does then replace it and clean inside the throttle body with carb-cleaner. (3) The EGR Valve if equipped, could be sticking open, this causes the engine to die. You can check this with the can of carb-cleaner as well by spraying around the EGR if the engine speed changes then replace the EGR Valve. Hope one of these helps and please visit my auto-repair-website at: http://www.bigasautorepair.com/

What does p0401 code mean?

Hi there:

DTC P0401 - Insufficient EGR Flow
EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation. It is part of the vehicle emmissions system, and is used to reduce combustion temperature and pressure to control Oxides of Nitrogen. There are generally three parts to the EGR system: the EGR valve, an actuator solenoid, and a differential pressure sensor EGR (DPFE). These things work together to deliver the correct amount of recirculation based on engine temperature, load, etc. The P0401 code means that OBD detected an insufficient amount of EGR.

You may notice drivability problems such as pinging (a.k.a. pre-ignition knock) when the engine is under load or the vehicle is at higher speeds. There may also be other symptoms.

A code P0401 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:
- The DPFE (differential pressure feedback EGR) sensor is faulty and needs to be replaced
- There is a blockage in the EGR (tube), most likely carbon buildup
- The EGR valve is faulty
- The EGR valve may not be opening due to a lack of vaccuum

In fixing this code, it is quite common for people to just replace the EGR valve only to have the OBD code return. The EGR valve is not always the culprit.

Use a vacuum pump and pull the EGR valve open while monitoring engine RPM's & DPFE voltage. There should be a noticable difference in RPM's with the EGR open
Clean out the EGR valve and/or tubing to remove deposits
Check the voltage at the DPFE, compare to specified values (refer to a repair manual for your specific model)
Replace the DPFE sensor (with a good quality / OEM one)
Replace the EGR valve

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using FixYa, have a nice day.

How much should it cost to replace a bad egr valve for a 2005 chrysler 300c

An EGR valve is simple enough to replace. The part alone costs roughly $90.
It is located at the back of the engine.
If you take a look, there will be a Iron rod going from the back of your intake manifold ... downwards ... its going to the EGR Valve.

Cheers,

EGR Valve pintle intermittently sticking or not opening

possible but the code refers to the valve and or the solenoid to operate the valve
could be a loose / broken wire or bad ground connection
if it is that bad , replace the egr unit complete

I have a check engine for a 1995 Toyota Corolla- diagnostic code 71...What is it and also what parts do I need? Thanks

EGR system malfunction. Check EGR circuit/switches. Check/replace EGR vacuum hoses. Check/replace EGR Vacuum Modulator. Remove and clean EGR valve. Test EGR valve by applying vacuum to open. If necessary, replace.
