Low idle engine quits at stop

Starts up but when you stop or just idle the engine quits, MAP sensor makes it worse.

    MAP sensor off and engine starts but then goes into low idle and quits. Putting new MAP sensor on and it makes it worse

Try toying with the timing, there's a good chance it's off a little bit and it would cause the stall. I had the same problem and changing the timing definitely helped.

I went to go get my car inspected and it wouldn't pass because of a code P0106. I want to explain how my car is acting when started especially when its cold out. The colder it is the worse it starts.


I'd be more inclined to the cold start side of things. Relay, cold start sensor. Water Temp sensor not activating the cold start setting.

The lights going dim could be something else completely

I'm not sure I understand your question. When I first read it I thought you were saying you had an error code that the engine idle is low, but the error code you've given is for a MAP sensor problem which you mentioned in your post also. I'm going to guess that you've observed the low idle yourself, and when you ran the diagnostics the engine computer was complaining of a bad MAP sensor signal. This is triggered when the engine computer sees a change in another sensor that should correlate with a certain change in the MAP sensor, but the MAP sensor signal doesn't change as expected. Idle problems are a possible symptom of a bad MAP sensor, so this is not unreasonable. What your engine is telling you is that you should check the MAP sensor and its related wiring and hose connections to try to find your problem. If you fix the problem with the MAP sensor then your idle may start working properly again.

wow , you actually tried to look it up, a 1st time here.

the MAP is a baro sensor used to calculate fuel injection RATES.

if you have gross air leaks to the system the engine IDLE screams.

is it?

108 means the voltage is too high.

usually its unplugged, or bad sensor.

what i do is reseat the MAP sensor

i then make sure he vacuum port is not clogged. (both sides)

i then measure the output , keyon, and idle and gunning throttle.

any Voltmeter works here,

key on is 5v or near.

idle 1.8v

gun engine as the RPMs fall like a rock the volts tries to hit 0.5vdc.

very very easy to find with a voltmeter

if the meter agrees with vacuum gage, then the MAP is ok

and you have air leaks or low vacuum for (VAST reasons)

ask.

HOT and cold engine,
Is hot idle speed RPM right near 800 and steady,not racing fast?

power loss, is the CEL lamp glowing running, yes,scan it.
post engine type exactly. one of these?
1.3 L I4 (petrol)
1.6 L I4 (petrol)
1.4 L I4 (diesel)
1.8 L I4 (diesel)

so its the first 2, as you said, coil, so its a GAS engine.
power loss, do the 60k tuneup
clean the MAF, sensor. if it has one. ask how. first.
does engine power return , at wide open throttle, held? up hill?
yes/no
if no, weak maf, air leaks or low fuel presssure
if power loss is only brief, then bad TPS.
my guess this engine, is MAP based, no MAF,
if so, then clean the nipple on the MAP sensors.
make sure its not clogged .
If the map works ,any air leaks cause fast idle. and FULL POWER>
so id bet the power loss is from low fuel pressures.
that is why i ask for WOT power up a hill, hot, got that.
if just tip-in power loss (recovers) that is a bad TPS.
the do wear out. easy, at 100k.

there are 2 EFI systems, which one yours has im clueless but can fix both , easy. (maf or map based) aka. air /speed density systems.

95 cadillac reading code current p105 sometimes engine light comes on sometimes harder to start than normal, idles up and down up on stopping


Symptoms Symptoms of a P0105 check engine light code may include:
  • Poor running engine
  • Engine runs rich
  • Engine won't idle
  • Engine backfires through tailpipe
  • Engine misfire under load or at idle
  • MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) illumination
  • In some extreme cases there may be no symptoms other than MIL illumination
Causes A P0105 DTC could be caused by:
  • MAP sensor vacuum hose disconnected or plugged
  • Bad MAP Sensor
  • Bad TPS
  • Damaged or problematic MAP sensor connector
  • Damaged or problematic TPS connector
  • Damaged wiring
  • Short to reference voltage on signal circuit of MAP Sensor
  • Loss of ground to MAP sensor or TPS
  • Open on signal circuit of MAP sensor
  • Bad PCM
Possible Solutions Using a scanner or code reader, turn the ignition on and engine OFF; what does the MAP sensor voltage read? It should be about 4 Volts for sea level. If you are at a higher altitude, it should decrease about half a volt or so for each 1,000 ft. of altitude (this will vary from model to model) Or if you have a separate MAF (Mass air flow) sensor on your vehicle, they are usually equipped with a Barometric pressure reading. If so, the Baro reading should match the MAP reading (they both measure ambient air pressure). If they're roughly equal, then, check for Freeze Frame data of the MAP sensor (if available).
NOTE: Freeze Frame data is the PCM recording a fault when it happens. It captures the readings of the various PIDS (parameter identifiers)available to troubleshoot what happened. It's like a recording of the problem as it happened. At idle a typical MAP sensor Voltage reading should be about a volt, and at WOT (wide open throttle) it should approach 4.5 to 5 Volts. As for the TPS, at idle, the voltage reading is about 1 Volt or less. As the throttle is opened the reading will increase to 4.5 Volts at WOT. Do the two readings make sense? For example, if the TPS reading on Freeze Frame data shows 2.5 Volts (indicating partial throttle) does the MAP sensor indicate a reading that isn't at either extreme? Using the Freeze Frame data (if available) compare the MAP reading to the TPS when the problem occurred. This can help you identify what happened
If you have no access to Freeze Frame data then check if the MAP sensor voltage changes when you apply vacuum to it. You can do this by mouth or a vacuum pump. The voltage should increase as you apply vacuum. If the reading doesn't change as you apply vacuum, make sure there are no obstructions in the hose to the sensor. If the hose is clear, the MAP sensor is usually bad, but it doesn't rule out the following from causing the problem: Does the MAP sensor appear to be stuck at less than .5 Volts? Then:
NOTE: This code shouldn't set if the MAP is stuck at extremely low voltage, however, I'm adding it in because there's no way to know for certain for which vehicles a low voltage condition may set a P0105
  1. Inspect the wiring harness and MAP sensor connector. Repair any damage
  2. Unplug the MAP sensor connector. Also, at the PCM connector, remove the MAP sensor signal wire and check for continuity to the MAP sensor connector. If there is infinite resistance, then repair open in MAP signal circuit. If the signal wire has continuity to the MAP sensor connector, then check for 5 volt reference voltage to the connector and a good ground. If both are present, then re-install all removed wiring and replace the MAP sensor.
Does the MAP sensor appear to be stuck at full 4.5 voltage? Then:
  1. Inspect the wiring harness for damage. Repair as needed
  2. Remove the MAP sensor signal wire from the PCM connector. With a voltmeter measure the voltage with KEY ON ENGINE OFF. Is there 4.5 Volts? If so, unplug the MAP sensor and recheck. If it is still present, then repair short between the signal wire and 5 volt reference wire.
  3. If unplugging the MAP sensor causes the voltage to disappear, check that the ground is intact. If it is, then replace the MAP sensor due to internal short.

I would start with cleaning the throttle bore and plate. Then clean the Idle Air Control valve, IAC, as this is the device that controls idle speed. Use a can of spray carb cleaner and an old toothbrush. Trouble with the IAC would make sense if you can keep the engine going by holding down the gas pedal a bit.
Use the carb cleaner to check for vacuum leaks at hose connections and elbows. run engine and spray short bursts at hoses and listen for idle speed changes.
And lastly if problem is still there check MAP sensor.

I have a 1989 ford e150 5.0L. have to hold pedal to floor for it to start and it runs ruff and coughs when its running sometimes stalls when driving but will run great at times. oh and idles high and low...


I had an 88 that did something like that, it would idle up and down it seemed to be worse when the engine was cold. It turned out to be the MAP sensor, I never did get a check engine light. A friend of mine had the same truck and we swaped sensors back and forth until we found the problem.

Bad idle, no takeoff


Was the replacement MAP sensor new original or aftermarket, or used maybe? How is the reading of the O2 sensor? STFT and LTFT at idle and driving? Try testing the EGR or just plug the EGR port and try it if any improvement. It is asking for serious diagnostic work.

Here are some of the causes of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

Engine runs rough after about ten minutes /idles really low


Just trowing some suggestions out there, but, I would check the idle air control valve (solenoid) or the throttle position sensor. If they check out then my last guess would be the map sensor or the vaccuum to the map sensor. Hope I was able to help. Best wishes.
