Question about 2000 Volkswagen Beetle
Ok so, i am 18 and have a 99 beetle. i got it two years ago with 86,000 miles on it. recently i went on an 8 hour road trip. when we were leaving to come back, the check engine light came on and we noticed that my car was shaking when it was stopped at a red light/ stop sign and when i would go under 45 mph. this became to get worse. when in reverse it shakes really bad. yesterday, i went to put it in reverse and it had never shaken as bad as it did, and then my car just quit. now its sitting in the parking lot, since i have no clue what is wrong with it!..also the check engine light is still on! please help!!! im a college girl who wants her car back!
A shake with the engine running (known in the vernacular as a "shimmy") can be caused by several things. In this case, since it's at idle, I'd wager either a.) timing went off, which in an EC (electronic control) vehicle means you should be asking "why me?" or b.) could be a miss. Chances are, whatever the problem, that check engine code that got tripped will tell you what happened. It might be a simple thing like a sensor malfunctioned and now is telling the engine to fire wrong, dwell wrong, too much gas...etc, or it might be something went seriously wrong (broken engine mount, bad distributor...etc). Either way, get that code read and you should be able to get back on the road.
