1987 Camaro Battery Drain

I noticed my camaro (1987 base model, 2.8 V6, 5-speed manual) has a battery drain problem. While engine is running battery seems to drain the whole time. Alternator is working because with dead bat will still keep running (idles waaaaay up though when drivetrain is disengaged through the clutch). I have a suspicion it may be the positive terminal connector not putting voltage from alt back into the battery as it's totally ****, rattling around in the boot, doesn't seem too connected to the cable, but the other day the problem spontaneously fixed itself as I accelerated hard up a hill and then within two days unfixed itself. If changing the ends of the cable to top post doesn't help, any other ideas where I might look?

It seems to keep up but just barely. Interior lights are really dim, turn signal just goes on but doesn't click off and on like it should. Heater tends to really kill the battery. Dunno if this helps but voltage seems to really drop right after start up when the check engine light clicks on. It was weird when it fixed itself it shot up to about 13 on my voltimeter and sat there for about three days, then now it drops to like 9 or 10 and slowly drops into the red before hitting 8 and dying on me.

Did you try checking voltage output/charging at battery, then revving engine a bit and holding it at a higher rpm than idle to see if it is charging then? Yes if you suspect a bad connection, then repair it for sure, but try this just to see. I forget what years, but at one point in time, a lot of alternators didn't charge until rpm's were increased. You checked voltage with lights, heater, etc on at idle didn't you, then with all that off, to see if alternator keeps up with accessories & drain?

Sounds like the voltage regulator is gone, or on it's way out. More than likely built in to your alternator. I'd pull it off & take it to autozone or wherever, have it tested, but be prepared to replace it. What happens to the engine when you disconnect the battery totally when running, does it die? Starting the engine is quite a drain on the battery, so that accounts for the voltage drop then, which is normal if battery not getting proper charging. Double check belt is tight.

Old problem, but if not done already, disconnect neg terminal of battery momentarily, then reconnect and start. The ECM with go thru a re-learn for several minutes. The codes will reset, but if the problem still exists, the code will be re-thrown. Good luck.

My antenna in my 1987 camaro won't let down and it's draining my battery. where is the fuse box located so i can take out the fuse

I believe the antenna is powered thru the stereo, so you'd have to pull the radio fuse. You can unplug the antenna motor.

My guess is if you changed to an older style sending unit, you could eliminate that electric pump & just use your mechanical one as they did before EFI.

Car wont start

I am sure you have checked the battery, if so & good, look at the starter solenoid, on the large battery stud there might be two wires, one is the battery cable, the other is the power feed to the car, if you have this wire they have a fusable link inline, follow the wire and verify you have power on both sides on the link. This will get you started.

01 camaro drive by wire reduced engine speed

This is what I find from other webpost..

Some customers may comment on an MIL/SES light Illuminated with the" Reduced Engine Power" message or indicator displayed. A technician may find two or more of the following DTCs stored in the ECM:

P060E : Control Module Throttle Position (TP) System Performance

P1516 : Throttle Actuator Control (TAC) Module Throttle Actuator Position Performance

P2135 : Throttle Position (TP) Sensor 1-2 Correlation

P2138 : Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) Sensor 1-2 Correlation

A battery voltage drop during the cranking cycle may cause the codes to set and place the vehicle into the reduce engine power mode.

Test and charge the battery using the steps below.

Important: A low voltage condition may cause at least two of the following DTCs to set.

P060E : Control Module Throttle Position (TP) System Performance

P1516 : Throttle Actuator Control (TAC) Module Throttle Actuator Position Performance

P2135 : Throttle Position (TP) Sensor 1-2 Correlation

P2138 : Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) Sensor 1-2 Correlation

Perform a Diagnostic System Check. Refer to Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle in SI.
Check for DTCs and review the Freeze Frame/Failure Records to determine if sufficient ignition voltage was present when the DTC set.
- If the ignition voltage was low, then check for a possible battery drain. Refer to Battery Electrical Drain/Parasitic Load Test.

- If the ignition voltage was sufficient when the code set, proceed with normal SI diagnosis for the code(s) set.

Test and recharge the battery using Bulletin 02-06-03-009 or latest version on "Battery Charging Tips'.
Clear all DTCs.

Was wondering what this diagnostic code means. C0035

This solution is for 1987 to 1989 Chevrolet Camaro vehicles, TPI V8s.

It's an Idle Air Control (IAC) circuit failure. The close throttle engine speed is 125 RPM above or below desired (commanded) idle speed for 45 seconds. See a dealer service department for trouble diagnosis.
