97 VW Cabrio

My Radio is in safe mode, and I know the code, just not sure how to get to the point of entering the code, If I remember correctly you have to hold 2 buttons Simultaneous just not sure which ones.

Thank you so much for your quick response, I don't have a delta stero, I am not able to go to my car at the moment but I don't remember seeing a key for DX and FM1/2.

I saw another article that said hold the mode and scan button down, that sounds like what I did before, would you know anything about that?

  • c7mzp Oct 22, 2008

if I do it that way will I drain the battery? Also I know you are not familiar with my radio, but do you know if you can reset the codes?

  • c7mzp Oct 22, 2008

Thanks, I guess this means I will be buying a new stero for the car since I don't have the code... Really sucky part about the anti theft system....

If you have the Delta stereo (with the power/volume knob in the middle), you need to hold the "DX" and "FM1/2" buttons simultaneously. Hold them down for a few seconds, and SAFE will be replaced with numbers. Use the radio preset keys (1-4 I believe) to enter each number. When the code is successfully input, hold down the DX and FM1/2 buttons again, and the stereo will start to work.

If you mess up entering the code, you can try again. If you mess up a second time, you have to leave the stereo off and the key turned on in the ignition for an hour to allow you two more tries.

Honestly I'm not sure about that. Since you don't have a stereo I'm familiar with, go to and try their search feature - I'm sure the answer will be there, as that site deals exclusively with VW and has cars far older than yours, right up to the current models.

What you need to do is turn the key (but not the engine) on and leave it that way for an hour or so. This will allow enough time that the radio will "forget" (by design) that you entered two incorrect codes, and you'll then be able to try twice more before being locked out again for another hour.

Nope, you won't kill the battery by doing that as long as the battery is in good health (if it hasn't given you trouble, you'll have no problem - just make sure the climate controls are turned off and you won't have an issue). And no, you can't reset the code to something else - that's something that is programmed in at the factory and can't be altered.

You can get the code - you'll need to go to the dealer with your registration and title, and they can look up the code for you (and show you how to enter it) based on the VIN of the vehicle. They will charge you for it (probably up to an hour's labor, which is robbery, but there's no other way), and it's cheaper than a new head unit for sure. Make sure to write down the radio code and procedure on a card and keep it in your car for future use. Anytime power is interrupted to the stereo (battery dies, or is replaced, or the head unit is unplugged from its harness), you'll have to re-enter it.

Free radio unlock codes

I'm pretty sure you'll need to contact the manufacturer of the radio about a security code, or maybe your local VW dealership can help you if the radio is stock. I'd try the dealership first.

I have a 2002 VW Cabrio the radio is on safe mode. I looked in the trunk for the code, there is not a radio code listed. What exactly does it say? I found vin and paint codes.

the radio code would be on a card with the original owners manual. If you do not have the original owners manual or bought the vehicle second hand, the only way to get the code will be by going to your local VW dealer with the serial number/ownership slip and paying to get the code.

Safe mode car radio

To unlock your VW factory radio from "SAFE" mode, you will need to enter the radio code. Typically, the code is written on a radio card included with the documentation for the vehicle when the car is first sold.

If you don't have the code, or have lost it, you can retrieve it by visiting your VW dealer. You will need the car's VIN number and the serial number of the radio (located on the body of the radio).

The procedure to enter the code is as follows:

Press the "MODE" and "SCAN" buttons simultaneously and hold them until "1000" appears on the radio display. Release the buttons as soon as this number appears.

Refer to your Radio Card and use the station preset buttons ("1", "2", "3" and "4") to input the code. Press the "1" button repeatedly to input the first digit, the "2" button to input the second digit, etc.

Press and hold the "MODE" and "SCAN" buttons simultaneously until "SAFE" appears again. Release, and the radio should be unlocked.

Do not enter the wrong code more than three times, or the radio will lock itself. Note the dealer can also enter the code for you (they may charge a small fee).

You should be able to call the dealer and get the code for free. They may ask you to fax over proof of ownership. They always give me the codes when I call but I do own a shop. If a shop is telling you it cost 75.00 they are just wanting you to buy thier lunch for the week.

98 VW Beetle used-no radio code- I have radio & car serial #'s...

I assume you have this unlocked by now, but here's an answer for someone else for the future :-)
if you have the original radio that come with the car, look in the wheel well in the trunk, where the spare tire goes. (yep, you'll need to stand on your head). there is a sticker that will have the 4-digit code on it.
enter that into the radio.
I can't remember off the top of my head which one it is, but either the >> Scan or the am/fm button will be the "enter key"

Radio unlock code

For this code you most likely would have to get it from VW. Unless you get lucky and fine it on the internet. There is a good site to fine that can off stuff just look up the web site scribd.
Hope that this helps.
