I had the same issue . . . after getting my transmission replaced, I found out this is common, as there is a clip attached to a cable that jams (and can break). One thing that will help is to never park on the INCLINE. If you can't avoid it, once you come to a stop, with your foot still on the brake, and while still in DRIVE, apply the handbrake, then place in PARK.
When you are ready to go back in gear, press on the brake, remove the handbrake, then put the car in gear.
a 6ya Mechanic can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

the gearshift will not rise if you have gearbox problem you need to get the fault codes out the system to help sort it out best going to a jag dealer for help you can get it out of park to move it there is a release cable under the panel in the center glovebox red lever pull it up that then releases the park brake pawl in the gearbox
You will have to tow the car out to a auto transmission specialist as the gears have seized in the gear box. You will cause more damage if you over ride the engine controls. The torque converter must be stuck.
i have a meriva and battery light comes on and spedometer drops to zero then flickers i have changed alternator and still same problem sometimes car wont start fault codes are u2105 u2103 b1484 u2104 i have been told i need repair done on ecu
sounds like it is in get you home because of gearbox failure if its the early box with metal sump check selector cable adjustment it critical as the J gate micro switches and the linear switch on the side of the gearbox have to be in sync with each other. on the other hand if it is the later gearbox with plastic sump, which i suspect it will be, check it has not lost some of its oil due to leaking sump, common problem! other wise check fault codes in transmission control module, any codes relating to incorrect gear ratio means internal falure most times
Hi, Try releasing your parking brake and having someone push or rock your car. Sometimes the gearbox gets stuck in Park if the car moves after you put the car in Park and let the car roll a bit before applying the handbrake. It could also be a fault with the gearbox itself. Its also possible that the locking tab mechanism (that gets relesed when you press the button on your auto gear shift) has jammed. If you can get it out of Park do not put the car back into Park ,but rather put it in Neutral after you have finished driving around etc and use the hand brake when parking. At least you wont be stuck in Park until you get it to the repair shop. Note that your car can roll in Neutral, especially if your parking brakes are worn, so take extra care when parking ie point your wheels toward the kerb when parking on any hills or slopes. Any time your gearbox gets stuck its a fair bet that you need to get your gearbox inspected by an authorized repairer. Good luck, Steve (Melbourne, Australia)
It must be having automatic gears. It seems as if the gear teeth have got jammed up and the sensor automatically switched off the engine to prevent further damage. Also check quantity of the gear box. Anyway only a proper mechanic will be able to release the tangle, if any, but my sixth sense seems as if the parking sensor has malfunctioned therefore not releasing the safety feature of driving and thus not responding to the remote starter..........sodeep
