Question about 1988 Ford Mustang

1 Answer

Idle problem Gotta love this car. lol. ok. ignition is now fixed. At odd times and especially if the AC is off the idle goes wild. it will try to stall and you can see it trying to adjust itself then it will go up to 1500 or 2000 rpm. if you shut the car off and then restart it will sometimes go back to where is is supposed to be at. any ideas. i am trying to clean the idle air control/throttle area but was worried it might be the computer

Clean the throttle valve and the airbypass as you said, but also clean the MAF, diconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then drive a day or so to reset idle settings, I doubt it is the PCM/ECM, worked for Ford dealer 20 years, never saw but 3 bad ECM's, and those engines did not run at all.

How do I fix, bad idle in suzuki swift , check light on, no codes.

the title is contradiction
" check light on, no codes."<< totally wrong
scan it one more time with a REAL scan tool this time. (there are DTC errors , or codes as you said)

what does bad idle mean? misfiring, or idle speed too low
or too high? RPM, or

say what that means please.
and more important is engine hot or cold ? failing.???? or both????
there are over 50 causes.
but can be broken down to simple physics and gauges.
1: engine bad, lost compression.
2: engine cant breath, dirty air cleaner
3: ISC stuck closed or open or just stuck. (bad idle air supply)
4: bad spark, 1 or all 4 (never had a tune in this decade.
5: cam drive, slipped (belt) causing #1 failure.
6: air fuel mix too lean, and causes rpm drop and ISC fails.
7: air fuel mix too rich and misfires.
8: egr stuck open, it misfires and ISC gives up.
9: cat clogged, engine cant breath #2 like.
10: and the vast other reasons for misfire.

we cant drive it, see it or hear it misfire, so.....????

there is a test for all 10, ask. or get car serviced.

Erratic Ignition

why not let them fix it?
warranty extends with not solved problems in warranty
at least here in USA the laws are clear, on that.
first off, never take a car that runs prefect to be fixed.
or with no DTCs present.

if wanting to be part of the solution get a scanner,
and scan the PCM full time and see all those errors.
DTCS at the fail time.

if not, you will never ever fix it.
cant fix , not broken, no ever.
you must catch it. see?

erratic ignition.
does that mean gross engine misfire.?
or the dash lights (ignition) goes dead.
Tachometer bouncing,(have one)
other gauges acting odd.
engine stalls?
too low idle speeds.

i can list 100 causes. I wont.
only tests work, ONLY.
get the tool and use it , ask if unsure to turn on a scan tool.

92 dodge spirit idling too high

I have experienced this myself. try turning off the ac controls because there is a function in the cycle of the ac system that raises the engine idle to run the ac long as its on, the engine idle is raised slightly, and higher when warmed up. also, if you tap the gas momentarily it may "kick down" but takes a few seconds to slow if this doesnt work, try this can remove the negative battery cable with the key in the "run" position,(motor not running), then shut the key off and re-connect the battery.. turn the key on for a few seconds...(this resets the factory presets in the on board computer and the issue may be resolved) also there is a manual reset idle screw located on the back of the t.b.i. unit that controls the basic idle speed. mine is a nut over a slotted stud that gets turned to make the adjustment with a screwdriver and once done locked back by the nut. gotta remove the aircleaner housing to see it behind where the accelerator cables hook up to the tbi unit...good luck hope your not confused by all car has over 300000 miles on it..the original engine and been rebuilt totally at least twice..3 head gaskets, 4 timing belts, and on its second gas tank.pump went bad in the first one, and changing the tank was cheaper than doing the pump alone.right now my issue is that my key part of the ignition fell out of my steering column so I am left starting the car with a screwdriver(what fun!!!) and my speedometer dont work because the sensor went bad and the cruise dont work either as a result. gotta spend a day at the junkyard for parts to fix it..part of the fun of older cars....good luck..jerome

The timing belt is on and had all marks lined up, it starts and then idle down and stalls out

The timing is off by one or two teeth on the camshaft. Unfortunantly you gotta do it again lol
