Question about 1996 Mercury Sable

1 Answer

Starting problem. when trying to start the car it takes about 15 tries to get it to start. All you hears is a clicking noise. Had it tested and all they could tell me was that it had low cranking amps, that the battery was good, and so was the alt. How can you figure out if it the relay starter, solenoid, or starter that is going bad,

Won't start but can hear starter make a click noise when trying to start with key

will it start with a jump ? if it does replace the battery and have the charging system tested, if it will not start with a jump then most likely you will need to replace the starter.

My car wont start battery is not dead, but wont turn over?

if the battery is fine check if you hear a clicking noise coming from the starter motor when you turn the key to try and start the engine.
If you hear this noise then this is a good indication that the selenoid has failed meaning you need to replace the starter motor.

You can give the starter motor a hit with a piece of wood as some times this will get the starter motor working just to start the car but this isnt a permanent fix and could leave you stuck if you used the car.

Now if the starter motor isnt clicking but you hear a clicking noise coming from either the cars fuse box or the ecu when you turn the key to start the car then this would indicate a problem with the imobiliser this would need testing using a diagnostic machine as their is no other way of testing this to find out if its at fault.

Let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

It makes a clicking noise when I try to start my Jeep

Hi Tanner,

That clicking sound is what your starter solenoid sounds like when powered by a weak battery.

It should start with a jump.

The real questions are: How did it get weak? Will it recover?

Instead of performing a bunch of tests, why don't we take the path of least resistance. Get someone else to do them.

After you get it running, go to an auto parts store. They love to perform free tests in the hope that you will buy something. If it less than 15 minutes away, drive around a bit to let it recharge.

Ask if they can run a 'Load Test' on your battery. A load test is a voltage test with a twist. It simulates the load put on your battery by a starter turning over an engine.

There are an unambiguous Pass or Fail.

Pass means the battery is good.
Fail means your battery can't hold a charge and needs to be replaced.

What luck!! You're at an auto parts store. ;)

Best regards,
Mike

Engine will not turn over

Locate the clicking noise by having someone try start while you listen & feel for click, it's probably the start solenoid your hearing, if you don't know how to test it, replace it.

Van just clicks repeatedly when trying to start engine but will not start. It has power to lock doors, roll up windows.....what could it be?

Whenever you hear a clicking noise your piggyback solenoid/bendix on your starter is not engaging the starter to the flywheel. remove starter take in to auto parts store have it tested and confirmed bad, by a new one and install. hope this helps!!!

Car won't start. The battery is connected

Sometimes the starter sylinoid goes out. If its a clicking noise its the battery. If nothing try the starter. Sometimes you can tap the starter with a hammer and its good if that is not it test the starter. Start here before you go to anything else. Its the starter most likely.

2003 Galant Clicking noise when trying to start.

It is your battery it may not be completly dead but it is too dead to run the starter. It take 300 -600 amp to run a starter and 20 amp to run a stereo

Won't Start, just clicking

take the battery to get a load test done first, autozone does this for free where I live.  Sometimes a battery will still have 12 volts, but not enough amperage to start a car, the starter is the most demanding unit on the battery.  If it is not your battery, it is one of 2 things: a seized engine, or a bad starter.  I would say on a '94, as long as it hasn't been driven excessively hard, its not the engine.  you can take the starter out and have it tested as well.  Best of luck!
