Yes, it requires allot of tools and a repair manual is a must.

-   The timing belt went out in my 99 Passat and for the life of me it is a royal pain to work on, Ive taken off the entire front end of the car except for the radiatior. The space is very tight if you dont. The timing belt is well hidden so make sure you have plenty of room to move around to get to it. -   kristenbards

Yes, changing a timing belt is labor intensive. Also, you should know that even if you do change the belt yourself, if the timing marks are not lined up correctly you could damage your engine.
