Question about 1989 Mazda MPV

V-6 engine died twice while driving (as if someone turned off the key) re started ok.... but on the 3 time it would not start again.

v-6 engine died twice while driving (as if someone turned off the key) re started ok.... but on the 3 time it would not start again.
I replaced plugs, distributor (everything inside and out side on the side), Coil,
etc. nothing helped. in late Aug. My brother was visiting from CAL. he got it started but after 2min or less it died again. Still can not get it started. the coil ohm are right on per Haynes Manual and compared to a new ones.

Seems coil is getting intermittent or no power to the coil.

    I have been told it is this or that, well 500+ dollars later no change. so I need something better than a guess at parts that cost 100.+ dollars. I was told by a few Mechanics that it was the distributor, Pick up coil, crank angle sensor (yes this model has it). nothing changed. I'm not yet ready to put a bullet into it but almost if it cannot be fixed before i spend enough money to where I could have got a good used van or new one. So please help if you can but no stupid ??? like the wires (I assume the plug wires), but thanks anyway.

    yes, the wires were replaced no change so I returned them because they were 125.00 dollars here in E. OK. the distributor gets no fire thru to the cap or coil wires!

Hi,

Initially, pls determine if you have a consistent IGN B+12, that is the switched 12VDC that supples the dashboard instrumentation (gauges) and the ignition system. The IGN B+12 starts from the ignition switch and extends all the way to the fuel pump including most of the engine power supply.

Hope that this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things

turned up or should you need additional information.

    Did some checks and it would seem that there were some issues with the ignition switch or the ignition wiring connectors.

    A consistent IGN B+12 could be established with the use of a voltmeter with its test prods extended & clipped to the supply terminal of the ign coil. Alternately, in lieu of a tester, a test bulb could be hardwired. The idea is to be able to monitor if there is always +12 to the ignition system. As initially posted, checking for the IGN+12 starts at the IGN switch, connector, harness, connector, ignition coil.

    If even at or before the IGN switch, the +12 is missing or inconsistent, it may be needed to check the fusible link from the + terminal of the battery, spade connector, short harness, to the fuse/relay bank.

Tech notes This code is usually triggered when a not registered or damaged key is used to start the engine. When the starting operation is carried out five or more times consecutively with the same unregistered key, the system will lock. If the problem occurs try disconnecting the car battery for about 30 minutes and then try starting the engine with a known registered key. If the problem persist you have to have the dealer erase the code and reprogram the keys again.

If problem persist after disconnecting the car battery, try the following:

ESCAPE FROM LOCK MODE
1. Turn ignition switch OFF.
2. Turn ignition switch ON with registered key. (Do not start engine.) Wait 5 seconds.
3. Return the key to OFF position.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 twice (total of three cycles).
5. Start the engine.

The fuel pump may have died. Can you hear it turn on briefly, by turning the key to "on"? You may have to stand by the gas tank while someone turns the key to on. It should turn on for about 2 seconds and then stop, after pressurizing the fuel system. If you don't hear it, then check the fuel pump fuse. If the fuse is good, and the pump won't run, one needs to check that the fuel pump wire at the tank connector has battery voltage on it when the engine is cranking-then, you can assume the pump needs replacing.
If the pump is working and you have gas up to the engine, you would next check the ignition system. Start that by checking for spark on one of the spark plug wires.

Starts and dies unless I rev it up then it will Idle


The battery might be low but I doubt it is causing the "no idle" problem.
You should have an idle air control valve that the computer uses to adjust idle speed. That valve could be faulty or dirty.
Is the check engine light on when the engine is running ?
