Question about 1998 Toyota Corolla

1 Answer

Corolla 1998 stereo, lighter, boot and roof light, door remote not working

Looks like Im in a big trouble. I wanted to replace the original Fujitsu Ten cassette player with a new Sony CD/MP3 player. When I opened the cassette player, I found the sockets' shapes different from the Sony socket. So I thought to cut that socket out and connect the cables with the Sony's sockets. After connecting the wires with my new Sony's socket, when I checked whether it works, the CD player did not turn on, meaning no power supply. When I checked the fuse (one for Radio/Cig) it was blown out. I checked the cig lighter was also not working. I replaced the fuse with new one and it still does not work. Then I find that roof and boot lights are also not working. And the worst I find is that the door remote lock system does not work too. I can lock the car using internal center lock button or manually using the key but remote does not work; when i press the button only indicator lights blink and horn beeps once or twice. I cant figure out what is going on? One thing I should mention is that when I cut the wires, the switch was ON (I forgot to turn it OFF, me silly) and instead of cutting the wires one by one, I cut them together using a metallic wire cutter, which could have caused some short circiut. Can anyone please help solving this whole problem? I hope its not any serious problem than some fuse related issue. I am really worried. Thanks.

Thanks mas66 for your suggestion. It really helped. The stereo was wired correctly. It was the interior or dome light that was the culprit. I replaced its fuse and everything worked fine. The stereo, center locking, doors, boot light, cig lighter, I mean everything. I was surprised. :)

    Thanks again.

I would be concerned that you may have wired the stereo incorrectly, causing this shorting problem. I suggest that you take it to a stereo installer to check the wiring, as if it is wired correctly the stereo should at least light up with a new fuse in there. Unless the new fuse blew straight away when you put it in. The central lock is likely to be thrown off by the fact that the interior light isn't working, as it uses this input to figure out if the doors are open or shut. Check interior light fuse condition, and get the wiring you've done checked, would be my advice.

Check these two fuses. Fuse number 31 in fuse box location 4, if cigarette lighter, radio and clock. Else fuse number 5 in fuse box location 2, if only radio and clock and not cigarette lighter.

How do i take out my radio from my toyota corrola

The Toyota Corolla has been around long enough that many owners find themselves needing to replace the factory stereo. Installing a new stereo in the Toyota Corolla gives improved sound and updated features. Swapping out the stereo in the Toyota Corolla takes basic tools and less than an hour. This article covers models from 1990 to 2000.

Open the hood and remove the negative battery cable from the terminal. Apply the parking brake and place the car in "D."

    > Remove the trim from around the stereo by prying with your fingers at one corner. Some early models have two screws at the top of the trim piece to remove first. Allow the trim to hang on the drivers side of the dash if it's connected to the cigarette lighter.
    > Locate and remove the four screws holding the stereo in place. Pull the radio out of the dash and disconnect the wires from the back of the head unit.
    To install
    > Connect the wiring harness adaptor to the original harness and let it hang from the dash. Slide the new stereo into the Toyota radio mounting kit, which is a thin metal cover and secure it per the manufacturer's instructions. Most adaptors have screws to hold the stereo in place, however some have clips, which engage automatically.
    >Plug the wiring harness adaptor and antenna wire into the back of the new head unit and push the entire assembly into the dash. Reconnect the negative battery cable and turn the radio on.
    > Ensure all of the stereo controls and speakers are working. Secure the radio in the dash with the original four screws and replace the trim.

1998 Corolla Radio problem/replacement

ok... the 98 corolla (that i know of) only comes equipped with the tape deck and radio, you probably have a after market radio, these are easy to replace, you can buy any standard cd player to replace yours, even if the wiring harnesses dont match up right, i offer a diagram for the colors and labels on my tips, its fairly easy to do, check it out and good luck!

Boot alarm and boot light

The luggage compartment light uses the dome light fuse. So, I would say that the problem is most likely a bad switch at the boot lid latch. Failing that, there could be a bad connection at the junction connector which is located at the base of the left C-pillar (the part connecting the quarter panel to the roof).
