Question about 2002 Chevrolet Impala

1 Answer

Steering wheel controls dead.

Every thing worked on the steering wheel controls for the radio and speed control of my 2002 Impala LS. When I turned on the Left turn signal there was a crunching noise and the air bag fault icon came on and won't go off. The next day I observed that none of the controls on the steering wheel will work. I thought that maybe a fuse had blown but can;t find a burn't one.Any ideas?

You will need to replace the rotating contact under the steering wheel, it is called the clock-spring contact for short. have a dealer do this as it requires the airbag be disarmed and removed, this must be done by the book or serious injury can result if it goes off.

2002 impala the audio controls on the steering wheel stopped working

it could be your clockspring; it carries multiple electrical signals to and from the steering wheel (audio controls, horn, airbag). the wheel has to be removed to gain access to it for replacement, but it can be tested without removal. the easiest way to test it is with a diagnostic tool

2007 Impala SS with 30,000 miles mysteriously jumps from cd/aux to radio...

Do you have the steering wheel controls? If so, my guess is the "source"button on the steering wheel control maybe sticking. If I remember, I'll look at my Impala and see if the contol can be disconnected at the steering wheel.

Steering wheel controls

Replace the clock spring, or check all the cabling and plugs first. If you are inexperienced take it to an auto electrician, otherwise do it yourself but disconnect the negative battery terminal for 2 minutes prior to opening the steering wheel to check the plugs, as not doing so could cause the airbag to go off. In addition you can also take out the airbag fuse. Check radio control plugs and close it up again and reconnect everything in reverse order. If that doesn't fix it, then have the clock spring replaced professionally, its too much mucking around if you don't know what you're doing.
