thanks for your response, so let me understand this right -the rack cost is $250 is that just one? or is it right and left? also could it be something else that would cause a problem with stering or turning the stering wheel in on direction? thanks

That would be for an entire rebuilt steering rack assembly, and that is high on the price, no one rebuilds these steering racks, to many problems. I show the Rack cost about $250.00, then 3 hours of labor, labor here is $120.00 pere hour, so the cost with fluids and parts should run about $600.00 + or - a $100.00 or so. Is this new part gold plated?

Just one, nothing else will cause your problem, it is caused by an internal pressure leak within the rack unit.

WHEN YOU PULL THE STEERING APART YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO ALIGN THE FRONT WHEELS AGAIN, DON'T YOU AGREE?

99 Olds alero will only turn to the right. On quick inspection found that the rack and pinion moves with turning the wheels. Is it supposed to?

The whole rack & pinion does NOT move! Only the rod out of either end of it. If the main body, where the hoses connect, is moving the mounting bolts are missing, or broken.

Normally any vehicle with rack & pinion steering, that will not turn left equals a bad rack & pinion.
The "wont turn left" is the classic industry wide indicator that the rack & pinion is worn out.

My 200 buick lesabre is extremely hard to turn to the left; turning to the right is normal. Any suggestions as what it could be?

A stuck valve in the steering rack. Try adding Lucas power steering stabilizer to the pump. Drive it for a week and see if it gets better. If it doesn't you will have to replace the rack and pinion.

No, replacing the engine won't. You just need to replace the power steering pump...

Or, you may have something wrong with the rack and pinion part of your steering system....what year of Buick?

99 cavalier..all of a sudden the steering wheel is locking up and it seems to be getting worse. I can't even get it to turn anymore!

It sounds like your valve in the rack and pinion steering has gone bad or your steering pump has gone, but if the fluid is good in the power steering pump and there was no wining noise form the pump then it's a good chance the the rack and pinion needs to be replaced. Good luck and keep me posted.

Steering trouble

the problem is that your point of stering is more to one side than the other and has to be readjusted to the right.

Power steering

Support front wheels off ground. Chock rear tires, get an assistant for safty. Start engine (do not put in gear) step outside of car and manually turn wheels left and right by hand. Cut off engine. Turn key back to release steering lock. Manually turn wheels by hand again. If it requires the same ammount of strength to turn wheels, then Rack and Pinion is bypassing internally. Solution... replace rack & pinion.
