Replacing water pump on mitsibishy space wagon trying to takr off fly wheel cover at the last bolt on crank is it left hand or right to come off as i cant get last three bolts off water pump 1997 petrol gti spacewagon any aditional information well apreciated cheers davie

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable
    • Radiator hose
    • Accessory drive belt
    • Front cover
    • Timing belt. Refer to the Timing Belt procedure.
    • Water pump
3.2/3.5L
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable
    • Upper radiator hose
    • Timing belt. Refer to the Timing Belt procedure.
    • Idler pulley
    • Water pump
now the timing belt.

2.2L
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disconnect PCV hose from cylinder head cover.
  3. Remove the air intake duct.
  4. Remove the left side ground cable from cylinder head cover and disconnect ground cable connector on the left side wheel arch. Remove right side ground cable from generator stay and disconnect ground cable connector on the right side wheel arch.
  5. Disconnect the 3 (black, green and blue colors) engine wire harness connectors from chassis harness of left rear side of compartment.
  6. Disconnect the cooling fan wire harness connector from cooling fan on left side top of fan shroud.
  7. Use a wrench to rotate the drive belt tensioner as shown to remove drive belt.
  8. Remove PCV hose from cylinder block.
  9. Remove intake duct stay from cylinder head.
  10. Remove two bolts for remove ignition cable cover from cylinder head cover.
  11. Disconnect ignition cable from ignition plug.
  12. Disconnect camshaft position sensor harness and crankshaft angle sensor harness from behind generator.
  13. Remove the 4 bolts, then remove the crankshaft pulley.
  14. Remove timing belt front cover.
  15. Loosen the timing belt rear cover bolts as shown in the accompanying figure, then remove the camshaft angle sensor.

  17. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  18. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  19. Using a box-end wrench on the drive belt adjuster, turn the adjuster clockwise and remove the drive belt.
  20. From the left rear of the engine compartment, disconnect the 3 electrical connectors from the chassis harness.
  21. Remove the crankshaft pulley-to-crankshaft bolts and remove the pulley.
  22. From the front of the engine, remove the nut and the engine harness cover.
  23. Remove the timing belt cover.
  24. Rotate the crankshaft to position the timing marks at Top Dead Center (TDC) of the No. 1 cylinder's compression stroke.


  25. Remove the timing belt tensioner adjusting bolt and the tensioner from the engine.
  26. Remove the timing belt.

but there is one step that varies, per your question , that pulley
Use tool No. J-8614-01, or a suitable pulley holding tool to remove the crankshaft pulley center bolt. Remove the crankshaft pulley.

righty tighty-lefty loosey, or RHT, right hand threads.

on the 3.2/3.5L v6 the center bolts comes off.
and this

Install the crankshaft pulley and tighten the pulley bolt to 123 ft. lbs. (167 Nm).

if car is M/T we use 5th gear, to remove crank bolts
if car is A/T this is a pain, thus the tool above.
how to lock any A/T crank to achieve this is tricky.

show a nice list of ways, some work others dont.
depends on exact engine in question, not stated once.
fly wheel lock.

i usually just make my own tool, with angle iron
some use a chain wrench, (making a nice ugly mess)

Crankcase bolt


which one, there are many bolts,
do you mean the end of the crank shaft, front , damper pulley bolt
are you test spinning engine? or taking the bolt off or on.>?
the treads on all bolts this engine are RHT, right hand thread
bar stool: righty tighty; lefty loosy
no engine, size stated, but this works.

crank case? pan, bell, crank, head bolts. fly wheel? lots.

How to replace water pump 2003 alero. 3400 engine.


Removal & Installation 2.2L Engine To Remove:
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2. If equipped with an automatic transmission, remove the exhaust manifold..
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Right front wheel and tire assembly.
    • Right front fender liner. chevy_cav_02-04_accescover.gif

    • Access plate on the water pump sprocket from the timing cover.
  6. Install J 43651 water pump sprocket holder or equivalent to the water pump sprocket.
  7. Use the access plate bolts to attach J43651 to the engine front cover.
  8. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Bolts that secure the sprocket to the water pump.
    • Bolt that secures the engine block to the water pump.
    • Bolt that secures the engine front cover to the water pump.
    • Feed pipe that joins the thermostat housing to the water pump. chevy_cav_02-04_wp.gif

    • 2 Bolts that secure the water pump to the engine block.
    • Water pump.
To Install:
  1. Use a threaded stud in the hub to align the water pump sprocket.
  2. Install or connect the following:
    • Water pump.
    • 2 bolts that secure the water pump to the engine block.
    • Feed pipe that joins the thermostat housing to the water pump.
    • Front cover bolt and the bolt that secures the engine block to the water pump. Tighten the bolts to 15 ft lbs (20 Nm).
    • 2 of the bolts that secure the water pump sprocket to the water pump.
  3. Remove the threaded stud.
  4. Install the last bolt.
    • Tighten the bolts to 89 in lbs (10 Nm).
  5. Remove J 43651.
  6. Install the access plate on the water pump sprocket to the timing cover.
  7. Install the access plate bolts.
    • Tighten the bolts to 18 in lbs (10 Nm).
  8. Install the front fender liner.
  9. Install the right front tire and wheel.
  10. If equipped with an automatic transmission, install the exhaust manifold.
  11. Fill the cooling system.
  12. Connect the battery ground cable.
2.4L Engine To Remove:

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable
  2. Drain the engine coolant.
  3. Remove the exhaust manifold.
  4. Remove the coolant intake pipe as follows:
    1. Remove the coolant inlet pipe bolts.
    2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
    3. Remove the engine splash shield.
    4. Remove the bolts from the transaxle-to-engine block brace and remove the brace.
    5. Remove the radiator hose from the coolant inlet pipe.
    6. Remove the coolant inlet pipe to oil pan bolt.
    7. Remove the coolant inlet pipe, thermostat and seal.
  5. Lower the vehicle.
  6. Disconnect the heater hose quick connect from the heater outlet pipe.
  7. Remove the front timing chain cover and the chain tensioner.
  8. Unfasten the water pump-to-cylinder block bolts.
  9. Remove the water pump-to-timing chain housing nuts.
  10. Remove the water pump and cover mounting bolts and nuts.
  11. Remove the water pump and cover as an assembly. Separate the two pieces after removal.
  12. Clean the mating surfaces.
To Install:
  1. Install the water pump cover to the water pump assembly.
  2. Install and hand tighten the pump cover mounting bolts.
  3. Install water pump cover assembly.
  4. Install and hand tighten the cover-to-block mounting bolts.
  5. Install and hand tighten the water pump-to-timing chain housing nuts.
    • Tighten the water pump-to-timing chain housing mounting nuts to 19 ft lb (26 Nm).
    • Tighten the water pump cover-to-water pump mounting bolts to 124 in lb (14 Nm).
    • Tighten the water pump cover-to-engine block bolts starting with the bottom bolt first to 19 ft lb (26 Nm).
  6. Install the heater hose to the water pump pipe.
  7. Using new gaskets, install the exhaust manifold.
  8. Install the oil level indicator and tube.
  9. Connect the brake vacuum tube to the cam housing.
  10. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  11. Install the catalytic converter.
  12. Install the coolant inlet pipe.
    • Tighten the inlet pipe-to-oil pan bolt to 19 ft lb (26 Nm). Tighten the coolant inlet pipe bolt to 124 in lb (14 Nm).
  13. Install the timing chain and tensioner.
  14. Lower the vehicle.
  15. Connect the oxygen sensor.
  16. Fill cooling system and check the system for leaks.
3.4L Engine To Remove:
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Loosen the water pump pulley bolts.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Drive belt.
    • Water pump pulley bolts and pulley.
    • Water pump bolts, pump and gasket.
    • Clean the water pump mating surfaces.
To Install:
  1. Install or connect the following:
    • Water pump gasket and pump.
    • Water pump bolts.
      1. Tighten the water pump bolts to 89 in lbs (10 Nm).
    • Water pump pulley and bolt until snug.
    • Drive belt.
  2. Tighten the water pump pulley bolts to 18 ft. lbs (25 Nm).
  3. Fill the cooling system.
  4. Check for leaks.
  5. Connect the battery ground cable.

How to change water pump on toyota sienna


3.0L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Drain the engine coolant.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
    Wiper and blade assembly Top cowl seal and panel Window washer hoses, from the ventilator louvers Left and right ventilator louvers Heater air duct Timing belt
  5. Mark the left and right camshaft pulleys with a touch of paint.
  6. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE Be sure not to mix up the pulleys.
    Right and left camshaft pulleys bolts Pulleys from the engine
    No. 2 idler pulley by removing the bolt 3 clamps and engine wire from the rear timing belt cover 6 No. 3 timing belt cover-to-engine bolts Water pump nuts/bolts Water pump and gasket from the engine

To install:
  1. Check that the water pump turns smoothly. Also check the air hole for coolant leakage.
  2. Apply liquid sealer to the gasket, water pump and engine block.
  3. Install or connect the following:
    NOTE After tightening the bolt, be sure the idler pulley moves smoothly.
    NOTE Be sure to align the knock pin hole on the camshaft pulley with the knock pin on the camshaft.
    NOTE Be sure to align the knock pin hole on the camshaft pulley with the knock pin on the camshaft.
    Water pump, using a new gasket. Tighten the nuts/bolts to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm). Rear timing belt cover. Tighten the 6 bolts to 74 inch lbs. (9 Nm). Engine wire with the 3 clamps to the rear timing belt cover No. 2 idler pulley. Tighten the bolt to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
    Right-hand camshaft pulley, with the flange side outward.
    Tighten the camshaft bolt to 65 ft. lbs. (88 Nm), using the removal tools Left-hand camshaft pulley, with the flange side inward.
    Tighten the camshaft bolt to 94 ft. lbs. (125 Nm), using the removal tools Timing belt
  4. Fill the engine coolant.
  5. Install or connect the following:
    Heater air duct Left and right ventilator louvers Window washer hoses to the ventilator louvers Top cowl seal and panel Wiper and blade assembly Negative battery cable
  6. Start the engine.
  7. Top off the engine coolant and check for leaks.

Removal & Installation

2.2L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Drain the engine coolant.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
    Exhaust manifold, if equipped with n automatic transaxle Right front wheel Splash shield Water pump sprocket access plate from the timing cover

  5. Attach Water Pump Sprocket Holding Tool J 43651to the sprocket using the access plate bolts to secure the tool to the engine front cover.

To install:

  2. Remove the threaded stud.

    Water pump sprocket access plate to the timing cover and tighten the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm) Splash shield Right front wheel Exhaust manifold, if removed
  4. Fill the cooling system.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
    WARNING Do not rotate the flex coupling more than 4 degrees or damage may occur. Doing a water pump on a 01 chevy impala wit a 3.8. and the last dam bolt on the pump is right in line wit the p/s pully , and not where the holes would normaly line up wit it but its right on the rib line....


If you can't reposition the P/S pully to line up the hole and bolt you will need to remove the power steering pump to get to that last bolt. Good luck.

WHEN I CRANK MY BLAZER I HEAR A GRINDING NOISE WHEN I TURN THE KEY TO CRANK IT....SOMEONE said something about the shins ( starter),,,someone said water pump....someone said radiator


I don't see how the noise you hear could be coming from the water pump or radiator but yes it could be coming from not having the starter shimmed out far enough from the ring gear. Did you change the starter or do anything prior to hearing this noise?

alfred11s: No, you don't have to lift the motor. You do have to remove the right hand engine mounting insulator.
I will give you the procedure for the removal to access the pump:.
1.Drain engine coolant
2. remove right hand engine mounting insulator
3. Remove #2 and # 3 timing belt covers
4. Remove front engine mounting insulator as follows
a. remove hole cover
b. remove the 2 bolts from the mounting
c. remove the nut, the through-bolt and front engine mounting insulator
5. Remove the electric cooling fan
6.Disconnect engine wire remove the bolt and 2 nuts and disconnect the engine wire.
Water pump removal instructions:
1. Disconnect the crank sensor connector from the dipstick tube
2, Remove the dipstick tube and dipstick (only 1 bolt holds it)
3. Disconnect the water temp sensor from harness
4, Remove the two nuts and the # 2 water inlet from the hose.
5.Remove the three bolts which retain the water pump!
CAUTION! try to keep antifreeze off the timing belt. Put rags down and pack them where the coolant would normally spill.

It is a right hand thread and you usually need an impact gun. Take the fan out of the way, to give you more room, I have found that helps.

Need to set timing on a 88 subaru 1.8 liter


The crank shaft pully will need removal and the water pump pully as well, also the 2 inspection covers and the center housing cover that they conect with, when removed all of the timing belts will be exposed as well as crank shaft end. I used a screw driver angled wedged and held in on the teeth of the fly-wheel to lock it in position so I could remove the crank shaft pully bolt, (standard lefty-loosey threaded). This would have been easier with the fly-wheel locking tool from subaru, or even just a budy to hold the fly-wheel while i turned the bolt loose at the crank pully. I unbolted the fan and slid it out of the way, I did not even need to unplug it. just be sure battery is not conected. The oil dip-stick tube has one 12 mm bolt at the end of a brace at top of engine. loosen and pull up and forward to remove. the crank shaft bolt-you will need to put back in the bolt only! on the end of the crank shaft so you can rotate the engine manualy with a socket on the crank shaft pully nut, while looking through the hole on the top of rear engine area just above fly wheel. wach fly wheel as it turns, look for 3 lines side by side these are not the timing degree marks they are seperate from them, align them to the little arow on the houseing in front of the 3 little marks. be sure the e-brake is set, trany in nutral so engine can turn freely. inspect the cam shaft pullies, on the surface there are 4 evenly spaced holes, there is one tiny hole that lays between the other holes, this little hole that is the pully mark, it needs to be at the twelve oclock position, there is a small groove on the housing at the twelve oclock position as well. align the two with each other, the little hole with the little notch directly above. do the same for the other side cam pully, same way. loosen the idler pulies for each belt, 2 bolts, move it to its full retracted position, pushing on it with fngers against spring tention, titen one of the nuts so the pully stays retracted/pushed. remove old belts, being carefull not to move the place marks of either of the 2 cam shafts or the engine crank placement. put in the new belts check to see if belt has a direction of dravel and match with engine, mine it did not matter but was told that it may with other belt makers? i don't know about that? but thought it was worth the warning?
once belts are on be sure again that marks all mate with marks on all 3 points crank and fly-wheel, both cam shaft pullies with notchs, now release the tnsion on the idler pullies, and retighten where they fell. check again on the 3 timing points be sure they have not moved again... tireing but worth it. if the have moved off of any mark you must realign it by moveing the pully to the rite spot and putting the belt back on. one tooth off on the drivers side of engine cam can meen up to 16 degrees of timing lose either way of perfect. once aligned, put the center cover back over the crank shaft, bolt on. put on the oil dip stick, put on the water pump pully and crank shaft pully, put on belts. leave the fans out untill all is done, just be sure they are free of obstacles so if they come on later it does no harm to it, you, or anything else. leave off the inspection covers at each cam pully. be sure to un block the fly-wheel. re asemble engine and componants to the installed normal positions as best as posible. re conect battery, be sure all tools are clear, start engine, if it will not run smoothly re set the distributer for timing, if still runs bad, you may have one or both cams off by plus or minus 1-2 teeth one the belts. this was hell... you have to move one side one tooth and start the engine and time it again, if that was not it then you move one tooth in in the oposite direction from the oiginal spot, now 2 teeth the oposite way. if not better put back on the original tooth, and do the same to the other cam one step and start at a time untill you find it to work the best, it may even be off by 1 tooth on the rite and 1- tooth on the left. This was a nite-mare but i finaly found the rite placements.
take 2 aspirin, advil, etc. pre-medicate for the manditory headache. and best of luck..
if you are wondering if the valves and the pistons may have struck, forget it subaru made this 1.8l engine as a none contacting engine, this meens that they can never touch piston to valves even in a cam belt failure.
