Question about 1989 Pontiac Firebird

1 Answer

Will not start or even turn over

I have an 89 firebird formula 350 and it will not start. when I go to start it all the electronics will turn on once the key is halfway but as soon as I try to turn it over everything turns off and it wont engage the starter. I just replaced the starter about a year ago and just replaced the battery about two months ago.I first noticed something was wrong when I was leaving a bar and it wouldnt start (the same symptoms listed above) So I waited a while and called my buddy to come get me, but as soon as he got there the car started fine. So for a couple of days I got in the habit of trying to start it and when it wouldnt I would just wait 15-20 min. and it would start right up. But whatever was wrong finally gave out and I have no idea what it could be. Any help would be much appriciated. thanks

When I turn the ignition to the on position, the courtesy lights turn on (check engine, brake, dash lights, under-dash lights, etc.) but when I go to start it, everything shuts off, and it doesn't try to engage the starter.
It all started after I changed the oil the other day. Before that, it started fine. After the oil change, I went to start it, and it turned over and started, but would die shortly after, then it got worse and worse, until eventually I arrived at the problem I described above.

My 89' pontiac firebird formula's ignition switch is becoming harder to turn. Its almost like it is tightened up. It is alot tougher to turn. What should I do?

Before replacing it try spraying Wd40 directly into the key hole to lub it up.
Spray it good and do all your key locks while you are at it.
I hope my suggestions helps and all the luck to you.

Speedometer reads too high

with the difference in ratio, the drive wheels rotate at a faster rate of RPM. you will also notice that the motor revs higher RPM as well and that will not change. However, you may need to change the speedo cable to resolve the speedometer discrepancy.

Need new ecm for 1991 formula firebird

YOU MIGHT TRY A WRECKING YARD. YOU NEED THE EXACT MATCH TO YOUR ENGINE IN ORDER FOR IT TO BE CORRECT. THE CAR MAY BE WRECKED , BUT THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE SHOULD BE FINE.
