91 Pontiac GP, won't start - gas problem

Daughters car ran out of gas, put 5 gal in, won't start.
It will run if I squirt starter fluid into intake.
Does this mode have a fuel pump shutoff if the tank runs dry,
and if so, where is it.

So there is no shutoff breaker for the fuel pump that
    I have to reset?

  • donv751 Oct 20, 2008

No, no accident, so I guess the pump has just
died. That will be the first thing I change.

Yes this is most likely the fuel pump, and here is why, the tiny little pump in your gas tank works really hard, the way it is able to do this is the fuel around it is very efficient at cooling it, if the car is run low on fuel allot and then run out of gas it burns out the pumps bearings which are also cooled and lubed by the gas. Replace the pump and the filter.

If this is a 3.1 injected engine then you may have to bleed the air out of the line up by the pressure regulator.

with the key on tap on the bottom of the fuel tank with a rubber hammer and see if the pump starts,if it does then it is going bad but may work for a while .

Where do I spray starter fluid in an 05 chrysler pacifica..ran out of gas and hoping it will start with the spray..did put gas in

Remove the air intake from the air filter container to the throttle body. Use only a quick shot of starting fluid. Can you hear the fuel pump run? Power cycling the key should get fuel flowing and is safer than starting fluid.

I ran out of gas in my car, so I put $5 gas in the car and it didn't start, so I added another $5 gas in in again and it still won't start, we tried boosting it and it won't start so i don't know what is...

Dont touch the gas pedal or it might flood and not start. Have someone spray a little starting fluid in the Air filter tube while you try to start it.

Our Montana ran out of gas yesterday and when we put gas in we tried to jump it and it wouldn't start, so we had it towed home. What can we do?

First thing is to replace the fuel filter. Now use starter fluid sprayed into the intake to get it started.

think you need to bleed the thing look on the bar that supplies fuel to the injectors and you should see something that looks like a tyre valve .turn ignition and and push the middle bit down till petrol squirts out

Car ran out of gas, when gas was put in the car just cranks but wont start.

I know with some cars, you need to put in at least 5 gallons of gas after running out in order to reset the sensor so it starts sending the gas

Sounds like air in fuel line. Purge fuel line. By "crank", do you mean engine spins but won't catch? Try starter fluid in intake.

99 fire bird wont start

Sounds like the fuel pump is bad. You need to test fuel pressure. I can tell you the fuel pressure spec, but what year is it 89 or 99? And what engine?

try to put 2 gal of gas.
if you run out of gas, the system require little more than a gal of gas to get from the pump in the tank through the filter to the injector. Approximately 1gal just to pressured the fuel rail.
