If it is not a knock then let it go, do you want to tear it down when no one can tell you or venture a guess what the problem is?

The engine makes a whirring sound when the air is on. The sound is quite brief, but when it is occurring there is power loss from the engine, the sound is very rythmic in its occurence.

The A/C compressor robs alot of Horse power from the engine...
Defrost will engage the compressor too...
The whirring may be the coolant fans engaging (drawing air accross the A/C Condenser ).

All of this falls into the ' normal opporation ' catagory , and should not warrant any worries.

Why does the dpf light keep coming on my masda

I've found the following info at mazdaforum.com , which I will reproduce word for word:

If the Diesel Particulate Filter indicator illuminates continuously - Drive the vehicle at an engine speed of 2000rpm or higher and a vehicle speed of 40Km/h (25mph) or more for about 10 to 15 minutes to remove the particulate matter. The engine sound and smell may change as the particulate material is being removed.

If the Diesel Particulate Filter indicator flashes - Take your vehicle to a Mazda Authorised Repairer as soon as possible to prevent damage.

Diesel estate - won't start.

First thing to check is to slacken the injector pipes and see if fuel is getting there when you crank the engine, if ok then it would be wise to check the timing belt has not broken , if ok then do a compression test of the engine. Has there been any work carried out prior to it not starting , regarding the timing belt or cylinder head?

Tearing noise coming from engine

What you should do is, get a pair or ramps and get in under your car, you'll be amazed at what you'll find loose and busted off an auto that age.

Mazda 6 2.0 136bhp diesel stalls all the time on tick over.

The problem is the SCV valve, that regulates the fuel pressure at the injection pump. The problem is solved when we replace that valve.

In that link you have the picture of the valve and its part number.
