Question about 2001 Oldsmobile Silhouette

2002 Oldsmobile Silhouette Thermostat

I have a 2002 Olds Silhouette, which recently gets real hot before cooling down. The temp gage will get into the red and an alarm will come on, then it will cool down. I figure it's the thermostat sticking, or not operating properly. I do not have the owner's manual, and would like to know where the thermostat is located, so I can install a new one and hopefully relive this.

Thanks,
Frank

SOURCE: drain the antifreeze on a oldsmobile silhouette

Under the bottom of the radiator on the there is a drain ****, you will have to raise the car and crawl under it to see it, be careful to not break it, the screw in plug is fragile, it will be hard to unscrew.

SOURCE: Olds silhouette heater blows cold air

as long as the engine temperature is normal, i would suspect a clogged heater core, the dex-cool antifreeze is notorious for building up deposits in cooling system. have heater core flushed first to see if it makes any difference

does the temp gauge or light come on? is the car over heating? .... oh and a starter can test fine when its cold, but the heat soak from the engine and exhaust affect it's performance drastically. it sounds like you need a new starter.

I I have replaced the water pump and

How does the radiator look. When you look inside. That sounds like the cooling system is clogged. Also make sure the fans are coming on. Those vans really like to kill the electric fans.

Intermittent hot air

I would check the coolant level in the radiator and oreservoir to make sure you don't have an air bubble trapped.

2002 OLDS SILHOUETTE

The problem is usually one or the other.  Both get 5 volts from the engine computer.  If the problem is the gas gauge, you'll have to change the sender in the tank.  Generally, an aftermarket pump/sender unit is $150-175.  Get one and drop the tank to install.  The temp gauge is another matter and it could be dirty coolant.  If both are going nuts together, you'll need a new computer.  Junk units are fine.
