Question about 1989 Jeep Cherokee

Engine dies after a few seconds (intermittent)

My friend has an 89 jeep cherokee, and it just recently started having a stalling issue.he said it stalled right away in the morning and after driving awhile it stalled he was driving.it will start and die after a few seconds. i took out the grommet for the cps after reading through a tsb to see if it would help at all,not really sure if it did or not. i smells like there is fuel leaking through the fuel pressure regulator but i don't see any liquid.i found a hole in the pcv hose that runs to the back of the air cleaner so i cut the hose shorter and put it back on. after all that it started about 5 times then stalled once and has started every time since.i have read alot of solutions saing to replace the cps but have also read some that say it didn't help. does anyone have any ideas

I would check the Idel air controll motor that goes into the front of throttle body. Take the two screws out and clean it with throttle body cleaner. If it has a grove in it or has wierd marks just replace it.

Things like this are hard to diagnose over a computer. however, crank position sensors on jeeps are extremely common!! i think if one is able to afford and install on their own, i would try this first. i dont think they are that expensive. the fuel smell be from trying to start it.-- how are all the tune-up parts?

Intermittent Stalling Problem Code: P1282

The Idle Air Control Valve (IAC) is a device that controls the air to fuel ratio in modern fuel systems. A long shaft, called a pintle extends and retracts on a spring within a housing to control the amount of air around the throttle plate. The Electronic Control Module (ECM) controls the pintle and adjusts it as the engine runs. Over time, the Idle Air Control module can collect gunk and get dirty causing the pintle to not extend all the way into the housing. This can cause the engine to run poorly and stall.
Cleaning the IAC
Despite what some will tell you, the Idle Air Control can be cleaned in many cases. It will have to be removed from the engine, but standard carburetor cleaner will often clear out the gunk and allow the pintle to slide freely again. Remove the unit, spray the cleaner into the housing and work a rag into the housing to clear out any remaining dirt and debris. Be sure to wear proper protective eye wear. You may need to let the unit soak in carburetor cleaner for a while. it may just be worth pricing it out before cleaning it some iac are very cheap like 20 bucks not sure how much it will run you. may not be your issue but you can at least inspect your iac. also you can pull out your pcv valve and give it a shake if it rattles your good also give it a visual inspection if it doesnt make noise replace it they are also very cheap

Jeep grand cherokee will start then dies 2 seconds and will start back up and die agian whats going on with my jeep

code 12
in usa we use OBD2 and a real OBD2 scan tool
and if not USA and is code 12 ,it is the problem.
OBD1 uses that , code 12, long gone here....
DTC 12 indicates battery input to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) was disconnected during the last 50 key starts.
reset ECU and see if code 12 comes back.

stalls hot and cold or both.
ever tune it up this last decade or last 60k miles.?
there are 50 reasons for stalls.
we dont go there.
we do the basics, the basic tests. ask. (ASE otto cycle engine checks)

I have a 1996 jeep grand cherokee that is stalling

sounds like you may have a fuel delivery problem,There is a fuel regulator that keeps a steady pressure this may have the same tendencies as a fuel pump cavatating also,Have a good garage do a fuel flow test as well as a fuel pump pressure test.

2000 jeep cherokee starts then stalls in approx 3 sec 4.0 has new crank sensor

I am going to assume that it will not run even if you push on the accelerator pedal?
Can you install or attach an old timing light to the spark plug wires, turn it one and try to start it. The light should flash with the engine running, but if it shuts off at time of engine die, and the engine is still spinning, you are losing spark, My suggestion is the cranks shaft sensor on bell housing.
Second, install a pressure gage on the test port on the fuel rail and watch it as you start the engine, fuel pressure should not drop as the engine dies, if it does, the pump is not working correctly. There are two modes of power to that pump, one to start and timed, for only a few seconds to prime the system, and one to run continuously. Find the wires going to the pump at the tank. Connect test light to those wires and watch what happens during crank and at stall, You should not have the pump shut off and the engine dies.
If you have spark, and fuel pump working, when did you last change the filter,,but I put that LAST.
It has to be one or the other of these.
Good Luck
