I am trying to remove the water pump. I can not get the fan separated from the water pump. I rented a tool set from the auto supply store and so I have a wrench which will fit on the nut sytle shaft of the fan assembly. However the bub of the water pump turns too and so I can not get anything free. I asked a technician at a Chevrolet dealer and he said he uses a chisel and a hammer. Another one said the hub on the water pump should have bolts to allow me to hold the bub while using a wrench on the nut style shaft of the fan assembly. There are no bolts in the water pump hub - there are 4 holes. Is there a tool to hold the hub - if so what is it called and where can I get it?
Replacing the water pump should not be that difficult so I must be missing something. I have consulted the 2004 General Motors Truck Service Manual but I still can not find the answer. The manual refers to a J46406 (while the picture refers to a J41240) but this I assume to be the wrench to go on the nut/shaft.

Hi you usuraly can use a long screwdriver to use as a stop to get the big nut off.depending or the rotation of your motor will determin the rotation to remove the big nut.if fan rotates clock wise turn nut clockwise.if counterckockwise turn nut counterclockwise.

Drain the cooling system.
Remove air cleaner.
Remove water pump belt cover (4 bolts)
Remove water pump drive belt by moving the belt tensioner in the direction which loosens the belt.
Remove the bypass hose
Remove the lower hose and pump cover.
Use remover/installer tool (J-38816), rotate pump assembly clockwise to remove from vehicle.
** this tool may be available for "rent" from your local auto parts store. It is necessary to prevent tearing the new pumps' seal during installation and it make removing a stuck pump much easier. Also, once you return the tool the auto parts store refunds ALL of your money.
First. remove the bolts that hold the upper half of the fan shroud and remove the fan shroud upper section. Then use a fan clutch removal tool (see picture below) to hold the water pump and remove the fan from the water pump.
Note: Many aftermarket parts suppliers will "loan" or "rent" you the tools for this job. They usually make you pay the price of the tool up-front, but will give you a full refund when the tool is returned to the store.

REMOVE WATER PUMP PULLEY.YOU NEED A PIN SPANNER WRENCH OR STRAP WRENCH TO HOLD WATER PUMP PULLEY WHILE LOOSEN WATER PUMP PULLEY BOLTS .YOU CAN BUY STRAP WRENCH OR RENT PIN SPANNER WRENCH AT AUTO ZONE PARTS STORES OR OTHER STORES HAS TOOLS CAN BE RENT. ONCE WATER PUMP PULLEY REMOVED. REMOVE THE WATER PUMP MOUNTING BOLTS. REMOVE WATER PUMP. IF WATER PUMP STUCK YOU CAN TAP WITH SOFT FACE HAMMER OR A LONG PIECE OF ROUND WOOD.WHEN WATER REMOVED.YOU NEED TO CLEAN THE SEALING SURFACE CAREFUL DONT SCRATCH SEALING SURFACE. YOU CAN BUY CAN OF SPRAY GASKET REMOVER.CLEAN SURFACE GOOD THEN WIPE WITH LACQUER THINNER OR ACETONE.THEN GET WATER PUMP NEW GASKET MATCH HOLES UP WITH GASKET TO WATER PUMP. TO REPLACE WATER PUMP.REMOVE THE RADIATOR SHROUD HALVES.REMOVE FAN CLUTCH AND FAN.YOU NEED FAN CLUTCH WRENCH AND A FAN CLUTCH PULLEY HOLDER.YOU CAN RENT TOOLS AT AUTO ZONE OR BUY THEM AT A AUTO PARTS STORE.THE FAN CLUTCH BOLTS ARE LEFT HAND THREAD. REMOVE THEM BY TURNING CLOCKWISE.BEFORE INSTALLING NEW WATER PUMP COAT BOTH SIDES OF WATER PUMP GASKET WITH GASKET SEALER.TORQUE WATER PUMP BOLTS 18 FT LBS.
Locate water pump.. It's where the bottom radiator hose goes from the radiator. Remove any brackets or parts that are in your way. Remove water pump! Reverse procedure for installation.You have to remove the fan clutch from the water pump shaft and lift the shroud, fan and clutch all out together. remove two bolts in the center radiator support which let the radiator move forward an inch or so, loosen the fan from the clutch for a little more wiggle room to get it out. The shroud will have rubber splash shields hooked to the lower sides too, so be sure to unhook them or you will tear out the holes in the rubber shields.The fan clutch has to come off anyway because it's attached to the water pump. You don't need to remove the fan shroud. Just take out two bolts on the fan clutch and loosen the other two so you can push the clutch back a little (DON'T let the fan clutch fall). Then remove the water pump. It's a little tight, but much easier than removing the fan shroud.the only specialty tool that you will need is the water pumpt "grab" tool and the fan clutch wrench. These two items come together in one kit that you can rent from the Auto Parts store. The "grab" tool holds the water pumpt pully firmly while you rotate the fan clutch retainer using the fan clutch wrench.
DO NOT attempt to use a break over bar or some other home-grown tool to hold the water pump pully while attempting to break the fan clutch free - you will mess up the heads of the four retainer bolts holding the pully to the water pump face.this will help.thanks.
To seperate the fan from the fan clutch there should be four small bolts that keep them together. Not sure thats what you are looking for but if you are trying to seperate the fanclutch from the water pump then you need a special tool to hold the pully from turning with the one hand while turning the fan clutch nut with the other they rent these tools at autozone.Once youve seperated the fan clutch from the water pump then you can take the fan off the clutch by removing the four small bolts.Please rate my assistance in helping you thank you.
fan clutch is threaded onto the shaft of the water pump you can probably rent he tools to remove it from any advance auto or auto zone not direction of threads on nnew pump some are lefthanded thread good luck let me know how you make out
