Rotors on rear of 2003 jetta gls

My daughter has a 2003 jetta gls, i put new brake pads on the rear but i need to replace the rotors how do they come off . thank you

Do you really need the Rotors replaced? How many miles? Are they metal on metal when you brake? Can you have them turned at an auto parts suply house? Remove and replace as in solution #1 but explore yor options first.

Disconnect the caliper, hang out of the way w/ a sturdy piece of wire (don't let it hang by the hose) remove screws attaching rotor to hub, that's it!

The grinding sound was the metal part of the worn out pads chewing your rotors up. If the sound has stopped, then something is completely gone, probably what was left of the pads. You will most likely need new rotors, Advise you don't drive the car until the brakes are repaired.

How do i find out if my 2003 VW Jetta GLS 1.8T needs front brake pads with the sensors?


The best way would be to remove a wheel and look at the brake pads to see if there is a wire connected to it.

Yes, it has rear Disc Brakes, I would suggest to change the rear pads since they have to remove the rear Brake Calipers to remove the rotors and it wouldn't take much more time or labor to replace the pads at that point. That way when your rear rotors are re-installed and your new brake pads are installed your rear brakes should give you longer service life and better stopping power.

im sorry bro i find that you needing special tools a load of bs. i may be wrong but i really really doubt it. brakes are easy. first locate the caliper and there should be 2 bolts holding that tight. loosen the top bolt and then take out the lower bolt from the caliper. the old pads should just fall out. remove the master cylinder cap. (the jug with brake fluid in it.) compress the piston replace the old pads and push the claiper back down on the rotor. tighten bolts back up pump the brakes till hard with the car off and then repeat for the other side.

How do you replace rear rotors and brake pads on 2006 Jetta


There is a special tool you need to do this. It is virtually impossible to do without this tool. I got mine from Harbor Freight for $20. the kit comes in an small orange case and has multiple heads and it pushes and turns at the same time. Do not use a C-clamp, it will damage the piston. This tool still does use some manual labor, but it is worth it when you save a few hundred dollars doing it yourself!

These are not much different from most modern disc brake systems. Once the wheel is off, you will find the caliper assembly is held on with guide pins that screw into place. Little spring clips hold the pads to the caliper. If you do one side at a time you can reference the other to make sure you get it back together right. Be sure to unhook any speed and wear sensors before pulling the caliper off. Use a coat hanger or other wire to suspend the caliper. (not good to hang by the hose) Take the cap off the brake master and compress the brake pistons with a C clamp before you try to put the new pads in place. If the master overflows you will want some rags there to catch it. Brake fluid and paint don't get along very well. To do the job right, you need a dial caliper to check the thickness of the rotors. The minimum thickness is stamped into the hubs on most VWs. If there are scores or lines worn into the rotor they need to be removed and machined. If not, you may be able to remove the glaze from the rotors with some fine sandpaper and lots of elbow grease. ( I always take mine in for machining as it also ensures any warping is taken care of.) On vehicles with 4 wheel discs it is recomended to do all 4 at the same time, but NEVER replace in less than pairs. (front or rear) Another safety note, don't breath the black dust. It's carcinogenic.

The rear pads are usualy harder than the front and the harder the pads the more wear there is on the rotors Unless the rotors were worn to the point of replacement they could have had them skimmed.Being soft doesnt make much sense.Have an 03 ba falcon and only replaced our rotors after doing 125000ks The expidition is a similar beast that used the same brake system.Get the rotors skimmed and go to a slightly softer pad to extend rotor life

Do i need special tool to change the front break pad?


I'm going to assume you are talking about the front brakes since the brake pad warning light is wired to the front drivers side brake pad. Is this is the case you shouldn't put off changing the brake pads and rotors too long after the warning light comes on because you don't want to damage the caliper and cost yourself more money. Do them atleast within the next 500 miles if not earlier. The front brakes on the Jetta are standard single piston disc brakes. Buy decent new brake pads and you might as well buy new rotors instead of getting the old ones turned down (resurfaced, makes them thinner). You should also buy new brake fluid (good stuff) and flush the lines since VW recommends changing it every two years and it keeps the brake system clean and free of corrosion (saves money in the long term). Then you just jack up the vehicle, pop off the tire, loosen the caliper bolts, pull off the caliper making sure to still support it so the brake line doesn't get damaged (rig something up to hang it off the spring on the strut, i.e. bent metal clothes hanger), remove the one screw that holds on the rotor, pull off the old rotor, and remove old pads. There will be a pad sensor wire on the left front that you need to take off too. At this point you might need to push in the caliper piston in order to get the new pads seated correctly. There is no trick on the front calipers like the rear ones (the rear ones need you to turn the piston while pushing it in and is easiest to do with a special tool). You can use and old c-clamp or borrow a caliper tool fron a local auto parts store for the front. You should mount the new rotor first, then you might want to open the brake fluid reservoir (in the engine bay at the back, i.e. closest to cabin, in front of the driver), push the caliper piston back in, mount the new pads by usually sliding them on (use some brake quiet on the back if they don't have anything on them already), and put the caliper back on. The new pads might have the attachment for the sensor. You need to find out all the tightening values for all the bolts you remove and the best way for this is to buy the Bentley factory repair manual for your car (about $80). This will have the procedure I just outlined. It will also tell you how to change the brake fluid. The website forums.tdiclub.com will also have lots of answers for you and probably has pictures on how to do the work. I also recommend worldimpex.com or germanautoparts.com to buy whatever parts you need.

One thing I should mention, the rear brakes in these cars wear out long before the front brakes. If you have never had those serviced you should really look at them too. They may be down to metal on metal if the fronts are worn out.
