Question about 1999 Chrysler Town & Country

1 Answer

Non vat key starts but shuts down, after three tries, will not start at all. Must sit for hours before restart.

I am looking for a solution to this problem, van has 240,000 miles and still runs good, just has this pesky problem. Key will crank but will not stay cranked, after three attempts, it will not turn over at all. Restart can only be attained after the unit sits for many hours, not sure how long usually let sit over night. 1999 Town and Country Limited. This problem is intermitant...CR

Same problem. Cranks 3 or 4 times and dies within a couple of seconds and then turning ignition produces no crank though plenty of power for accessories, lights, etc.; it's a security lockout which used to self correct after a few hours - now it will go for days without working - even if battery is removed. We've replaced ECM twice to no avail. Please don't tell me about a chip on the key - there is no "chip" on the key, this is a 1999 T&C Limited with a ordinary metal key. We've had some problem with the ignition "sticking" but application of some graphite lubricant has loosened it up - could this really be just an ignition problem (i.e. the ignition cylinder gone bad)?

I too have the same problem, start, engine runs 2 seconds then quits, do that 3 times, 4th time it will not start or the gauges work, ever noticed that, if you turn the switch on and your gas needle does not move, then its not going to start. Now as far as keys, I have 3 keys, one is a valet, all 3 keys will not start the van. The switch went bad several years ago and was replaced, however this lockout problem did not start after the ignition switch was replaced. Several times I have been able to start it if I fist pounded the top of the dash above the tach and speedo, now this works sometimes, sometimes doesn't. So I think its in the dashboard circuitboard somewhere, I don't feel like pulling the dash out yet. I am afraid to drive it, if it quits while your out, it wont start even after a few hours sitting..Most of the time, it will start after 12-24 hours. Sorry this does not give you the answer, its just my experience.

Also, in a related or not related problem, I was driving and all a sudden, I noticed the gauges went "screwie",lol, speedo kept going up till it showed 120 mph, the gas and water and tach gauges went slowly down to zero. But it was running fine, huh, so I pounded the dash, and all gauges, and dash lights came back on and worked fine since.

I'm assuming that the vehicle has an immobiliser system standard, and that the key has a chip in the head of it. The key itself could be intermittently faulty, or the pickup ring at the ignition barrel. The best option would be to get a new key cut and coded to the vehicle, and just try it. If the fault reoccurs, it's likely that it will be the pickup ring, but it probably needs further diagnosis at that point.

Intermitten non start on 1996 grand am, after sitting starts no problem.

The most likeyl cause is a faulty fuel pressure regulator, when the regulator diaphragm fails the vehicle is initially hard to start after sitting awhile, no fuel pressure bleeds down and needs to built back up before starting. An easy test is to removed the vacuum has at the regulator, if fuel is present, the regulator is defective.

How to disable the vats security system on my 2001 oldsmobile alero?

you cant disable it, its a pass key system not a vats system (vats reads a resistance value in the key). The ignition cylinder has a sensor in it that measures a rotating resistance (then translates into a voltage reading) that the bcm reads to let the car know to start. Usually you can try and start the car, then the security light will start flashing - leave the key in the on position for ten minutes until the security light goes out. Then turn the key off, wait, then try and restart - they usually relearn the code after the first 10 minute try. Sometimes it takes three 10 minute cycles.

Truck wont start up

check that the battery posts and terminals are shiny clean and tight. Have a load test done on the battery as it indicates a bad cell.

Go to start the car and security light comes on don't flash just stays on and the car will not start have to wait three minutes before it will start and not all the time will it start and the engine light...

The problem might be your Vats security system. This causes the car to either "not start" or "shut down" while running, or start for 5 seconds and then die. (depending on the system) If the security light flashes, i guarantee that this is what the problem is. 1st trick, (if not starting) turn the key forward 2 clicks till right before it would normally start, leave like that for 10 minutes. ( no less ) After 10 minutes, turn key back then forward and your car might start. I did this in my regal for more than a year. If its shuting down while running, im sorry i have no quick fix...

Cheap fix: Bypass the chip in your key. Temporary, but effective. Until the TDM (theft deterrent module) in the dash poops out, then you're kinda screwed. I was told that these types of key security systems have a 7-10 year life span. Sucks for us. This link explains the "Key Issue" pretty well.

Never worry again fix: Bypass the whole VATS/Passlock/passkey I or passkey II system entirely. Literally take it out, and throw it away. I just did this in my Regal. Took about an hour. Took longer to find the thing than it did to fix the problem. For a list of cars effected by this problem. See the NEWROCKIES link on the right side of their page......... They sell a unit for 200 bucks to totally bypass this system FOREVER. life time-money back and all that. Finally did this in my car. Well worth the 200 if you've looked into getting this replaced... Anywhere from 600-1000 bucks.

I recently bought a '91 Buick Regal Custom with under 60k. The first problem I encountered was trying to restart the car while the engine was still warm. The engine will wind when turning the key but...

It's when the security light starts flashing that the infamous "chip" in the key becomes a nightmare to many. Gradually the car begins not cranking anymore or if it cranks it would start and die in a second. Randomly it will do this more and more often until it won't start anymore. VATS, PASSkey and Passlock immobilizer systems are killing cars all over North America, they have a short lifespan and are certainly more effective against owners than thieves. Here is how you save your car
