Question about 2000 Hyundai Elantra

Bad cat.concerter i got a check engine light,did a code test and it showed 0422(catalist flow bank 1).do these cars have 2 converters and how could i tell witch one to change?i have suspected a bad converter because of performance of the car but the one under the hood(attached to the manafold)dosent seem to be getting to hot.there is a resonator,what appears to be another resonator and muffler-could one of these be a second converter?its a TN car&i thought they onlt put 2 on CA cars.thanks

Your car does have 2 converters it would be the manifold one causeing the code this part is warranty covered for 150k hope your under that

the code P0137 is low voltage o2 sensor bank 1 sensor 2.. mean o2 sensor rear of catalyst converter has low voltage it should stay around .500mv mean converter cat.do is job.with a voltmeter test backprobe signal when engine running. by default key on engine stop around .500mv.

You will have a total of 4 O2 sensors, two on the left (driver's side-Bank 1) and two on the right (passenger side - Bank 2). Sensor 1 is before cat. convertor and sensor 2 after cat. converter. Hope this helps.

The check engine light is blinking usually because of a misfire which can cause damage to the cat. The blinking check engine light does not necessarily mean the the cat is damaged.

The first thing you need to do is find out what codes are causing the check engine light to come on. If there is an O2 code it will help you identify the O2 sensor. The sensors are divided into to banks. Bank one is the same side of the motor as the number one cylinder. Bank 2 is the other side of the motor. Then they are divided into sensor 1 and senor 2. Sensor 1 is always before the cat. Sensor 2 is always after the cat. So if you had an O2 code for the Bank 2 sensor 1 O2 sensor it would be the opposite side of the engine from the number one cylinder and the sensor before the cat.

IMO, your first priority should be to figure out why the engine is misfiring and causing the check engine light to blink. Solving that first may take care of the O2 issues or the O2 could be the issue.

P0421 warm up catalyst...below threshold (bank 1).. 1st of all, what is BANK 1 and is P0421specific to the problem or it is just a general code for cat converter or oxygen sensor


A v-6 or v-8 engine will have two banks. Bank one is the side of the engine with the number 1 cylinder. Bank 2 is the other side of the engine. In your case Bank 1 is cylinders 1-3-5 on the back side of the engine closest to the firewall. Bank 2 is cylinders 2-4-6 on the other side of the engine.

You have two cats bank 1 and bank 2. There are two oxygen sensors before each cat that help determine fuel trim and are refered to as sensor 1 and two oxygen sensors after the cats that monitor cat efficiency and are referred to as sensor 2. The bank 1 sensor 2 O2 sensor is either providing a higher than expected signal or is switching like the sensor 1 O2's. If either of these has occurred the PCM detects that the cat is no longer working as it should and sets the code/turns on the check engine light.

9 times out of 10 it is a cat that has gone bad.

Huge problems with these cars. The Pre-cat converter is built into the exhaust manifold. Expensive to replace. No Recall on this item. Some say that inferior compounds in the catalyst cause corrosion and early wear of the piston rings. I have seen one of these use 5 qts of oil in 300 miles. Is this car using excess oil?

Where is the O2 Sensor located on 2003 Ford Focus? Check Engine Light is on and trouble shooter device says the problem is in the O2 Sensor Heater Circuit, but where is it located.


The code will tell you which O2 sensor it is.
The code will point to either bank 1 sensor 1; bank 1 sensor 2; bank 2 sensor 1; bank 2 sensor 2.

From what I remember with a focus, it should only have 2 sensors, sensor 1 will be located before the cat, and sensor 2 will be located after the cat.

Bank 1 is the converter on the side that engine cylinder one is on. Yes that is true about the converter, the computer is programmed for a certain value, an aftermarket cat will not meet that value and the check engine lite will be triggered.
