Question about 1999 Dodge Ram

1 Answer

1999 Dodge Ram erratic idle

Truck, while idling, will idle up and down, as well as, while driving down the road at cruising speed (55), the rpm's will jump up to 2,400 rpms for a second or two. It doesn't appear to be transmission slippage. I have changed the obvious (and cheapest): the spark plugs, wires, and distributor. Also replaced the air filter, and have run high octane gas, all to no evail. Does anyone have any idea as to what can be causing this??

I have the EXACT same problem.... still no resolution. However, I will add that today my truck decided to quit idling at all. As soon as I take my foot off the pedal, it dies... almost instantly. I figure the idle screw must be turned out a hair, but now I'm trying to access it..(they've sealed the screwhead!!! grrrr.

2001 Dodge RAM V10. Sometimes while idling, it will idle up and down. Noticeably, while driving down the road at cruising speed (60), pulling the rv trailer, the rpm's will jump from 2400rpms up to 2,800rpms for a second or two continually.

High idle unless driving in gear, but if clutch is pushed in or car is in neutral rpm goes up to 2900

run fault codes to check for accelerator position sensor problems . Check for vacuum leaks. If cable accelerator then check that the return spring on the end of the cable is attached and not missing.

I cleaned out my choke with correct spray and now just replaced my idle air control sensor but the car is still

You are equipt with a idle speed control motor. There is no way cleaning is going to clear it,When the RPM jumps it is either working and trying to compensate for a vacuum leak.Have the vehicle running as it jumps up and down feel the EGR is it hot to touch? Becuase that can cause the jumping RPM,Check the PCV valve with the car running plug it does the RPM stabalize? If it does replace PCV. You are searching for a vacuum leak

Drive cycle

Here is the OBD2 emission system drive cycle test procedure.
Engine coolant temp must be below 70c (158f) before starting the engine for either the first or second trip
The fuel level should be less than 1/2 full
First trip:
Start engine, idle for at least 1.5 minutes
Drive 3 minutes, hold b/f schdl: 1.5-2.0 msec, selector lever "3rd" eng rpm 1,800-2,000 A/C switch:ON Hold the recommended b/f schdl range. Allow road speed to vary as necessary.
Drive at 55-65 mph for 1.5 min b/f schdl 2.0-3.2 msec, selector lever "5th" Engine rpm 2,200-3,000
IGN "off" for at least 10 seconds (not more than 5 min)
Dive at 50-60 mph for 3 minutes Selector lever "4th" keep engine speed above 3,000 rpm Allow speed to vary if necessary. Do not decelerate for more than 3 consecutive seconds. A/C switch ON.
Drive at a steady state cruise of 53-58mhp b/f schdl more than 1.8 msec selector lever "5th" eng rpm 2,400-2,600
Downshift to "4th" and decel more than 5 seconds without breaking, then idle for 1 minute.
Drive two minutes b/f schdl less than 2.0 msec Accelerate to 41 mph, decelerate to 34 mph, accelerate to 41mph. Do not completely release the accelerator. A/C switch off.
Idle 1 minute in park or neutral
Drive two minutes Steady state cruise at 31-44 mph. Selector lever "4th" A/C switch OFF. Hold the accelerator pedal as steady as possible. Allow speed to change if necessary.
End of first trip. Turn the key off the begin the second trip.
Second trip:
Start engine, idle for at least 1.5 minutes
Drive 3 minutes, hold b/f schdl: 1.5-2.0 msec, selector lever "3rd" eng rpm 1,800-2,000 A/C switch:ON Hold the recommended b/f schdl range. Allow road speed to vary as necessary.
Drive at 55-65 mph for 1.5 min b/f schdl 2.0-3.2 msec, selector lever "5th" Engine rpm 2,200-3,000
IGN "off" add four gallons of fuel
I especially like the part where they want you to add four gallons of fuel. Not three gallons, not five gallons, four gallons. Gotta love those Nissan engineers. ...and of course they state that if the trace is not followed exactly (i.e. you botch the acceleration/deceleration) you have to start all over again from scratch

I have a 2000 ram 1500 5.9l v-8....when I am driving in high speeds(55-70 mph) the RPMs jump a little...from 2000rpms to 2200rpms and back again...seems to do it more often when I am going over a bump in...

I have had problems on the same truck with the throttle position sensor. I works just like a volume knob on a radio. When it stats to go bad, it will skip over the bad spots. It is located on the side of your throttle body and has 2-3 torx head bolts holding it on. They were $50 new, $100 to have a shop do it.

Won't idle steady; speeds up and slows down;even when your driving down the road it will jump from like 1.5 rpm to 2.

The idle control system is probably malfunctioning. have your mechanic check the idle control solenoid

Dodge ram 1500 engine rpms surge at freeway speed

those sensors could cause the issue, clean the MAF 1st, also clean the idle system using the following procedure, the IAC can cause cruise surge. I use this to cure these problems all the time.

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve (IAC) and throttle valve, they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
